Chylee Martin Act. 4.1.2 (Protein Factories) December 8, 2014 Aequorea victoria jellyfish have a pGLO gene that causes them to produce a green fluorescent protein. The production of this protein causes the jellyfish to glow under ultraviolet light. In this experiment, E. coli bacteria will undergo heat shock, which will make them go through chemical transformations that allow them to uptake plasmids from the jellyfish that contain the pGLO gene. The bacteria will then be spread onto two separate agar plates, one containing ampicillin and the other ampicillin and arabinose, to test whether or not the bacteria glow and therefore if they took up the newly transformed plasmids.
