over defined parts of Africa
• Any country could claim land
•Divided Africa w/ no regard for ethnic or

Christian missionaries felt it was their duty to
spread the word of God, and ‘civilize’ the people of
Africa. They (wrongly) thought that Africans were
without religion and therefore ‘savage’.
Religions saw Africa and colonies as a
chance to spread their faith and add
numbers to their folds.
