Child development involves the biological, psychological, and emotional changes that occur in human beings
between birth and till adolescence. Childhood is divided into 3 stages of life which include early childhood, middle
childhood, and adolescence.

STAGES OF CHILDHOOD
Early childhood
Early childhood ranges from infancy to the age of 6 years of a child’s life. During this period, development is
significant, as many of life's milestones happen during this time period such as first words, learning to crawl, and
learning to walk. It is considered as the best age to introduce as many new concepts as possible as the grasping
ability and curiosity to know new things is at the peak. It is the best age to inculcate the habits and behaviour which
is expected by their parents in their children.
Middle childhood
Middle childhood is considered to be between 6 to 12 years of age of a child. It is the stage where children move into
expanding roles and environments. Children begin to spend more time away from their family. They are now more
indulge in their school and other activities. As they experience more of the world around them, children begin to
develop their own identity. Their 4 important milestones are•

Adolescence
Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood. Children who are entering adolescence
are going through many changes (physical, intellectual, personality and social developmental). Adolescence begins at
puberty, which now occurs earlier, on average, than in the past. At this age when an adolescent is going through
different physical changes like the growth spurt, primary and secondary sex characteristic, which could be the most
difficult time of their life, they are expected to think and act maturely but still not allowed to put across it as a grown
up. There are intellectual changes as well in an adolescent that is why they always try to break the barriers and think
more in a practical way, but they often show unpredictable behaviour.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Maurice Elias, a psychology professor at Rutgers University and director of the university’s Social Emotional
Learning Lab, describes Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as the process through which we learn to recognize
and manage emotions, empathize with others, develop problem solving and decision-making skills,
maintain positive relationships and develop the social skills.
Social Emotional Learning plays a major role in every intellectual process and is a driving force which helps
brain to organize itself. And when it comes to children it is the most effective tool as it directly associates
how a child will grow-up as an adult. Children who are fearful or anxious have difficulty learning, whereas
those who feel safe and secure learn more quickly. Research shows that students whose social and
emotional skills are developed are better behaved, more positive, and less anxious than other students

who have poor social and emotional skills. Social Emotional Learning are not just helpful in leading a happy
childhood but will also reflect in their health, relationship, career, behaviour, and an overall adult life.
