The number talk was fascinating for all participants. Sara said, “It really opened my eyes to how
simple math could be once its broken down and you have the right strategies”.
The idea of number talks captured the interest of Leslie, who said, “If only I would’ve been taught
this way as a child; it would have improved my math skills so much more!”
It was also interesting to note that different styles speak to different people; some people took on a
specific strategy and went with that whilst others found it did not speak to them at all and found a
different strategy way more doable. This highlights the importance of number talks because it gives
the child a variety of methods to choose from. A blanket approach where all children must follow
one strategy makes it difficult for them to learn since different techniques speak to different brains.
