11th Grade Cost of Living Video 1
How much will I be getting paid? This is a common question before you start a job. No one
wants to start a job now and find out what they are getting paid later. Why is that? Because
what you are getting paid affects your cost of living. Your cost of living is the amount of money
needed to support a certain lifestyle. Rent, food, clothing, and where you stay are to name a
few. Your cost of living deals with the money coming in which is income and the money going
out which is expenses. In order to figure out what is good for you and your lifestyle, your pay is
important. If the company is paying you minimum wage, then you may have to stay home with
your parents, get a roommate, receive government assistance, or work multiple jobs in order
to survive. Minimum wage is the lowest amount that you can be paid per hour by law.
Regardless of the job, your age, educational level, or work experience, no employer can pay
you less than minimum wage. Each state sets its own minimum wage, but there is a federal
minimum wage that every state has to abide by. Some pay more than others depending on the
cost of living. If the employer goes below the federal wage minimum, they are subject to
penalties and possibly jail time. There are two types of minimum wage. The standard
minimum wage which is for lower level jobs such as retail sales associates and the tipped
minimum wage which is for workers that get a base pay amount plus tips such as bartenders.
The type of worker you are depicts how much you get paid. Unskilled workers do not have a
lot of skills to perform the job and can be cashiers or fast food workers. Semi skilled workers
have some training or education before performing the job and can be flight attendants or
truck drivers. Skilled workers require that you obtain a degree or have extensive training in
order to work this profession and are doctors or plumbers. The pay for each depends on
experience, education, or both. Some of the workers start off as interns or apprentices who
usually work under someone for free or low wages to gain knowledge in the field before they
begin their career. There is a lot that goes into how much you get paid versus how you live.
