FURTHER REACTION 1: EXPERIMENTS
STATION 1: LAVA VOLCANO
1) Measure 50 ml of vinegar and 40g baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
2) Record the temperature start (initial) of the vinegar.
3) Mix the vinegar and baking soda in a 100 ml beaker and record the
temperature of the reaction.
4) Observe and record the reaction.
STATION 2: ICE CUBES
1) Put some of ice cubes in a beaker.
2) Observe the melting ice cubes after 20 minutes.
3) Decide whether this is an example of an endothermic or
exothermic reaction.
4) Explain what is happening to the particles in the ice. Draw 2
diagrams to show the particles before and after 20 minutes.
STATION 3: RUSTING STEEL WOOL
1) Put a small steel wool in a 150 ml beaker.
2) Record the room temperature (initial) in an empty beaker.
3) Pour in enough vinegar until cover the steel wool in the beaker.
4) Allow the steel wool to soak the vinegar for about 5 minutes.
5) Remove the steel wool and put inside an empty beaker.
6) Insert the end of a thermometer into the centre of the steel wool and record the
temperature about 3 minutes.
