CHAPTER 2 REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter represents the review related literature, both local and foreign reviewed by the researcher, relevant to this study. The readings are directly concerned with the main concerns of the research study which served as a good background. Related Literature Academic Stress Students on Senior High School have many stressors regarding to their academic demands. According to Oxford Learning(2018), students may experience stress such as upcoming tests, home works, a heavy workload, poor organization skills, not getting enough of sleep, lack of support, and changes the routine. The stress that student have experience are based on the standard on the school whether they focus on their academics or not. Specifically, stress defined as any change or pressure in the environment. According to Thakkar(2018), academic stress can affect mental and physical problem such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, and stress related disorder which can result in lower grades. There are 8% of the students worldwide that are suffering from anxiety. Both stress and anxiety have a negative impact on their social, emotional, and academic success which may include individual's academic frustration, academic conflict, academic anxiety and academic pressure. Stress is one of the top challenges that most students dealing with. Those issues have stressors such as financial problem, overloaded assignments, time management and in aiming for having a high grades. Beacause of this pandemic, most of the students have both physical and mental breakdown(Anderson,2020). Academic stress has been identified as the primary cause of these alarming figures. Lee and Larson(2002) explained that stress as an interaction between environmental stressors, students appraisal and reactions for the same. It has now become a grave reality that is termed as “carrier stopper” According to Carlson(2016), there are 3 negative effects on the students performance which are decreases sleep quality, changes the mood of the student, and mostly failing in class. These effects would lead to negative outcomes specially to those students who pressures of getting high grades, balancing extracurricular while studying and spending time with family. Student today's generation has experiencing stress because they don't know what to do and how they can handle all their struggling in the new normal Education as this challenging academic term begins, and some students are learning remotely, while others are heading back in person we urge educators to pause and reflect on what worked and didn't during remote learning last spring. While we eagerly await the moment when all schools can safely resume in person,we strongly caution against reverting back to the "normal " way of doing things."Normal"was not working for so many student prior to covid-19. Pope D.2020. Related Studies Irawen et al.(2020) stated in their study entitled "Psychological Impacts of Students On Online Learning During The Pandemic COVID-19" that the psychological impact of students on the new mode of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely (1) students are bored with online learning after the first two weeks of learning from home, (2) considerable anxiety on research subjects whose parents have low income because they have to buy those materials for the online class program of their children and (3) emotional disturbances are indicated by changes in moods or mood causes by loaded of assignments that are considered ineffective by students. This study presents that most of the students are frustrated in the new mode of learning specially in online classes. Congruently, learning online brings unique challenges to students that would lead to the students to experience stress in their academic fields. According to Mental Health Organization, (2020), at the most basic level, stress is our body’s response to pressures from a situation or life event. Some common features of things that can make us feel stress include experiencing something new or unexpected, something that threatens your feeling of self, or feeling you have little control over a situation. This study can compared it to the certain topic in which stress appears to be way to know that our body is working as it respond to the pressure we encounter. This study features that the common things that can make us feel stress include experiencing new or unexpected of have a little control over a situation. Researchers agree to this statement because the researchers also experiencing this feeling that the student needs to control themselves to handle this unexpected situation. This pandemic is unexpected, this virus is unexpected and many more things we never expect to come. This Education system is one of the reasons why the students feel this stress because students used to be in a face to face class not in a virtual or modular. According to the study of Zaday(2015), Mental Health includes our psychological, emotional and social well-being; it affects our thoughts our feeling and our actions and helps to determine how we make choices, relate to others and handle stress. During this New Normal Education System most of the students been affected of this mental health issue especially stress. Long-term stress increases the risk of mental health such as anxiety and depression that has a possibility affect their academic performances.
