Saving Mountain Gorillas
Grace Karemera (13) lives in Rwanda in Africa. Grace wanted to tell the world about the
gorillas in her country and the problem they faced, so she decided to make a video. She
interviewed people in Rwanda to learn more about these animals.
Grace learned that Rwanda is the home of the mountain gorilla – this is the largest kind of
gorilla in the world. The problem is that there are only 720 mountain gorillas in Africa today.
This is because people kill the adult gorillas, take their babies and sell them to zoos. People
also cut down the trees in the forests. This destroys1 the gorillas’ home. Grace put all this
information in her video.
Grace also found out that gorillas are important for Rwanda. More than 14,000 people from
all over the world come to see them every year. These visitors stay in hotels and spend a lot
of money while they are visiting Rwanda.
In September 2008, Grace went to New York for a special meeting – the Kids Gorilla
Summit. She showed her video to lots of students and adults. Some of these people had good
ideas for how to help the gorillas. One idea was to raise money2. Another idea was to write
about the gorillas in their school newspapers. They also thought of putting video cameras in
places where gorillas live. This may stop hunters from killing them in the wild. It may protect
the forests because it will stop people from cutting down the trees.
While she was in New York, Grace and other teenagers met with former3 President Bill
Clinton. He agreed that we need to save the forests of Rwanda because they are the home of
the gorillas. He also said that the teenagers should continue to work together to tell people
about the problem.
