“Michael!” screamed Veronica from downsatirl. “Time for School I’m gonna be late for
work!”
“Coming” replied a tired young boy.
Michael ran down the brown carpeted stairs, grabbed his two pieces of burnt toast , and
walked out of his mom’s house and sat on the street ledge to wait for his mom where he ate his
toast.
Michael was in third grade and had recently just turned nine. His mom, Veronica was a
nurse at the only hospital in the city. People often asked why Veronica decided to work there.
She was qualified to be a doctor but because of the city’s small population there was no need
for another so she became a nurse. To that question she would always reply with “The
weather” or “ I love the weather here”.
The two of them lived in a small house because they did not need that much space. The
city they lived in was very small with a population of only a couple thousand people. They
knew a couple of their neighbors. The person that lived to the right of them was an old man
that was angry at the world for no reason. Veronica and Michael tried to avoid him as much as
possible. Of course like most small towns the cocaine and opioid epidemic had hit the city hard
creating a sense of distrust in their neighborhood.
