Learning Concepts:
Active Listening is important because it builds relationships, create new ways to
approach issues and avoids costly errors.
How to become an active listener?
 Sit in comfortable position.
 Focus/pay attention on the sounds that you hear around you.
 Listen to the sounds individually and try to identify them.
 Listen to the words and try to picture what the speaker is saying.
Learn to recognize that the speaker is making an important point by:
a. pausing
b. giving examples
c. repeating what has been said
d. increasing volume or changing pitch of voice
e. taking more time on one area
f. using body language (facial expression, gestures, posture, pace)
g. writing on the chalkboard
h. using direct statements (this is very important) or signal words (examples:
significant, most)
