CASE QUESTIONS
1. Identify the operations management problems that Dr. Barr is having at the clinic.
The operations problem that Dr. Barr is facing is they are experiencing changes in what customers
are asking from the services their clinic was designed to offer. The progressive situation in specialized
services, also the addition of other service such as grooming requires them a different setting. The clinic
wasn’t offering packages but the customers were requesting for it. Also, the staffs along with Dr. Barr was
not trained for these services.
2. How would you define the “service bundle” currently being offered? How is this different from
the initial purpose of the clinic?
The “service bundle” can be defined as dilemma that can turn into success of the business. The
clinic opened by Dr. Barr was originally designed to offer examining and surgical services only, but the
customers are now asking for a service bundle that includes grooming, examining, and minor surgical
services. It was supposed to be a veterinary clinic not a pet care business.
3. Identify the high-contact and low-contact segments of the operation. How should each be
managed?
The low-contact segments are surgery, examining and grooming. . However, the grooming is being
performed in high contact area because the groomers were being watched by the customers. Reception
of the customers and customers waiting for their pets are include in high-contact segments. These high
contact segments must be done in the time when the customer is present and in contact.
4. What should Dr. Barr have done differently to avoid the problems she is currently
experiencing? What should Dr. Barr do now?
Dr. Barr should have done research and plan thoroughly so that she have not experiencing this
dilemma. She should have learned that the market in their area is huge and the needs in that area is pet
care. If she is known about she may be ready for situation she is now facing. Dr. Barr must research and
plan for strategies she will implement so that her clinic will be under control. She must revise her
employees’ schedule and create inventory system. It is needed for the clinic to make some sort of
inventory plan to keep track of what they need and don’t need.
