HOW-TO MANUAL
Crabbe faces many challenges during this novel. Wouldn’t it have been nice if he had a
little direction (pardon the pun) in navigating (hehe) some of these? Your job is to
provide solutions. Create a manual that helps him solve one of the many conflicts he
faces.
Step 1. Identify conflicts that Crabbe faces. Write them here:
Step 2. Research solutions to one of these conflicts.
Step 3. Create a manual that explains how to face and overcome the challenge. Your
manual should include essential basic information and with simple step-by-step
instructions. Write your guide so that someone with no prior knowledge could face the
conflict with confidence.
Step 4. Use this requirements checklist to make sure you have:
___ written everything in your own words
___ an introduction
___ 5 steps or more that clearly illustrate what needs to be done
___ a title and headings for each section
___ photos/graphics
___ a conclusion
___ references for all your sources (What website did you get your information from?)
Step 5. Edit for SPG and visual clarity.
TITLE
Introduction
Explain the conflict your manual will focus on. Give background and context so your
reader can understand the situation and the obstacles to success. Sell the benefits of using
your manual.
Steps 1 – 5:
Give details and as much information as necessary. Short paragraphs will
suffice. Too much detail may make your instructions unclear, but too little
information may be vague and leave your reader scratching his or her head.
Pictures that correspond with your instructions can be a strong
communication tool. You can draw them or use samples from the internet.
Step 2:
Make sure you understand your role, your purpose and your
audience for this manual. Let this criteria shape the style, tone
and the content of your final product.
Step 3:
Another option to improve your work is to be creative with your layout.
Formatting and use of graphics and colour are ways you can improve
your efficiency. Experiment with different sizes for your fonts.
Step 4:
Have you edited for SPG? Mistakes in technical writing stand out like a sore thumb. Get
someone to proofread your work. They may spot errors you do not see.
Step 5:
There are only five steps listed here but if you need more
you can expand this section.
Conclusion
Summarize the key information and find a positive and snappy way to finish your report.
Has all your work been written in your own words? You can borrow information but
your sentences need to be written by you. You need to document the source(s) at the
bottom of the page.
