ABSTRACT
This study determined the effects of poverty problem towards students learning and
to their performance in school . This type of research utilized the descriptive survey method
and used questionnaire-checklist as research instrument in gathering data about poverty and it’s
effects of the students learning of Pangangan National High School grade 7, grade 8, grade 9
and grade 10 students. There were 2 respondents from grade 7 , 3 respondents from grade
8, 10 respondents from grade 9 and 5 respondents from grade 10. And the result of the study
shows from PNHS,are not fully affected with the problem of poverty. Based from the results of
this study, although poverty is a problem that gave negative effects to their personal life as a
student, but it was found out that belonging in poverty level didn’t affect their academic
achievement in school. However, it made them brave and gave them strength to deal and
cope unpleasant situations in life, thus the students identified as a poor. Otherwise, it made them
stronger to excel their performance or learning in school.
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Global poverty is one of the worst problem that the world facing and people are often
hungry , have much less access to education, regularly have no light at night and suffer from
much poorer health . To make progress against poverty is therefore one of the most urgent
goals . Global inequality is one of the major scenario , it strikes many people as inherently
unfair that some people are able to enjoy healthy , wealthy , happy lives while others
continue to live in ill health , poverty and sorrow . (www.google.com.ph)
Poverty most of all affects students through the different modes of their education
and also their health . For the students who live in poverty is not easy for them to come
to school . Poverty affects the students learning , it leads to poor physical health and skills
will never be discover, for the sudents ability to focus and remember the information is
slow , and less attentive
in class . It affects their grades
and the whole performance
in school .(www.childfund.org)
In todays generation , many students are affected on poverty . Poverty directly affects
the learning capacity of the students due to lack of resources available for the students
success but their many ways to cope with . Example ; A poor students may find a part time
job that suite their skills so that they can buy their wants and needs in school . In a long run , the
poor students lack time for bet fails , base by him/her school .
2
During the past years , we know that some students in Pangangan National High
School who were force to stop in school because of poverty . Less family income can effect the
students learning capacity in school . Some students think that they need to stop schooling
because they were a victim of bullying due to poverty . Related emotional and intellectual
hopelessness and frustrations are some behavioral effects of poverty to some students .
The researchers aim to conduct this study ; to gain information about the effects of
poverty to students and how they their schooling and what will be the effect of this situation if
they have limited money for the expenses to the academic purposes . Many of the sudents
belong to poor family but theres a lot of government who helped their financial needs and give
scholarschip to the students . Like Human Development and Poverty Reduction Cluster and
Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (CCT) .
As a researcher the reason why we like to conduct this research is to know the
fellow students and teachers how poverty affects to our daily life and sharing what we’ve
learned about the poverty . We the researcher , would like to study on the effects of
poverty as a problem to students in their learning capacity .
Objectives :
a) To find out the effects of poverty to the students of Pangangan National High
School.
b) To know what year level are the highest drop out that most affected with
poverty problem .
c) To determine the effects of poverty of students learning capacity.
3
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
Children raised in poverty have crucial needs met than their prosperous peers are and , as a
result , are subject to some grave consequences . In many poor househoulds , parental education
is substandard , time is short , and warm emotions are at a premium . ( Feldman and Eidelman
2009 ; Kearney , 1997 ; Segawa 2008 ) . Caregivers tend to overworked , overstressed , and
Authoritarian with children , using the same harsh disciplinary strategies used by their own
parents . They often lack warmth and sensitivity ( Evans 2004 ) and fail to form solid , healthy
relationship with their children ( Annert , Pinquart and Lamb , 2006 ) .
Psychologically, student who grow up poor , suffer more negative emotions when they
Become adult . According to Science Daily ( 2013 ) , it states that ; researcher found that test
subjects who had lower family incomes at age 9 exhibited , as adult , greater activity in the
amyglada , an area in the brain known for its role in fear and other negative emptions . These
individuals showed less activity in areas of the prefontal cartex , an area in the brain though to
regulate negative emotions .
In congruence , as these children grow up they come to realize that they are poor and start
wondering even yet during their tender years , why they are in such a situation and not the same
way they saw with some children who are clean , well dressed , well fed and being taken cared
of by their maids off to school and back home . And so as they grow older , a poor children
always thinking about why and what makes them poor and to feel discriminated , bullied , etc . ,
and encountered many trouble .
4
Just like in Pangangan Island , people experienced hardship because they lack money
to provide their education , lack of food , unstable home to live and some of the parents have
no enough money to support their needs and just rely on what the government will provide .
So other children just stop studying and find some work to live on . Others stopped
because of losing hope for to sustain online class . However , government provides some
basic needs for the unfortunate people yet still can’t enough of it cause most of them have a
large family members . In congruence with the situation , government will always provide
and make a way to help needy people .
In some cases the first thing that can be a reason of drop out / absenteism in school is
family problem . It is a sensitive topic that can affect the life of the students . Second is
financial problem . Money is everything ; money can do a lot of things and one of those
things is education . Third is health and well being of a young school children . Inadequate
of medical care and poor nutrition affect a child’s physical and cognitive development .
Lastly is the mobility , the ability to provide stable housing . Students move from one
location to another because their parents are in search of work or are dealing with other issues
that require them to move .
Learning capacity means that the physical structure of your brain , including neural
networks that determine how well you can think just like your memory , attention , speed of
processing and ability to sequence ideas . with capacity you will be able to do particular thing .
But study related that a poor school child is having a hard time to cope with what is being
thought in school . Learning capacity it is a measure of a student’s abilities ‘ , skills , and
expertise in a curriculum area . (www.igi-global.com)
5
Poverty and
its relationschip to academic success are also attributed to the lack of
community resources , education resources ,and stress . Students living in poverty do not receive
the same access to resources and therefore struggle to achieve at the same level of those student
who are not economically disadvantage . And also poverty affects academic performance in the
sense that it limits the access to different opportunities . However , one can also learn to
resourceful in order to fill what is lacking .
Intitutions and governance in the poverty response from pursuing growth in the period
immediately following the second world war ,the government of the Philippines transferred its
development strategy toward poverty reduction in the 1970’s and 1980’s . Kapit-Bisig Laban sa
Kahirapan ( KALAHI ) is still the current administrations that are over arching framework and
Strategy aimed at reducing poverty , improving governance and empowering communities . Its
core strategies include the following :

ACCELARATED ASSET REFORMS : A redistribution of physical or financial assets
to the poorest individuals , and programs that improve access to land and capital and
sustain the long-term ownership of these productive factors to marginalized groups .

IMPROVED ACCESS TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT SERVICES : Programs that
provide basic human services ( basic , education , health and nutrition , shelter , water ,
and sanitation ) to strengthen the human capital base .

PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT AND LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES :
Public avenue for job creation and microfinance avenues .
6

SECURITY FROM VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL PROTECTION ( INCLUDING
SAFETY NETS FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS : Reduced risk of the poor and
marginalized sectors and strengthened opportunities for them to participate in mainstream
economic and political processes.

INSTITUTIONALIZED AND STRENGTHENED PARTICIPATION OF THE
BASIC SECTORS IN GOVERNANCE : Strengthen opportunities to participate in
mainstream economic and political processes .

PRO-POOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT : Protects the rights of the
affected people .
According to ( Lister , 2004 ) , poverty is generally explained as the scarcity or the situation
in which a person lacks a certain amount of material possesions or money . If is a condition in
which community or a persons lacks the essential needs to enjoy a minimum standard of living in
the society .
( Johnson , Riis and Noble 2009 ) stated , that children living in poverty see many chronic
stressors , some of the examples are unsafe neigbourhoods where there are lots of crime , parents
who have low income where they can’t provide the needs of their children , parents who are
separated or divorce or siblings that living in different households , and households that
areovercrowded . All of the example above creates problem in the lives of children who are
raised in poverty and results in academic and behavioral issues in school .
7
In addition , poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to
ensure sustainable livelihoods . Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition , limited
access to education and other basic services , social discrimination and exclusion as well as the
lack of participation in decision-making.
Tony Atkinson said , inequality of outcomes amongs today’s generation is the source of
advantage received by the next generation . If we are concerned about inequality of opportunity
tomorrow . We need to be concerned about inequality of outcome today . Sir Tony Atkinson was
centenia professor at the London school of Economics and Fellow of Nuffield College , Oxford .
He was long been at the forefront of research on inequality , and bring his theoretical and
practical experience to bear on its diverse problems . He presents a comprehensive set of policies
that could bring a genuine
shift
distribution
of income in developed
countries .

LEGAL BASIS
Republic Act 11310 knowm as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Act, allows the
establishment of programs that invest and harness the country’s human capital and improvement
of delivery of basic services to the poor , particularly education, health and nutrition to break
intergenerational cycle of poverty .
Through this Act , it is a vital because it helps many poor Filipinos to end poverty and live a
better life . It also gives hope to each and everyone to be more comfortable especially parents
having a children who still studying . They build a program called 4ps or PANTAWID
PAMILYANG PILIPINO PROGRAM as some of the students who studying in Pangangan
8
National High School and also my cogroupmates has been part of this program it gives them a
chance to continue study and they felt grateful because this program help a lot of them where
government provides conditional cash transfer to poor household for a maximum period of
7 years to improve the health, nutrition and education aspect of their lives .

respondents . This study is limited to the students who belong to poverty level . For poverty in
this research is limited to students lack of finances needed for this study.
11
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
This research used a descriptive survey method using self-made questionnaires . It is design to
gather information about poverty and its effects of the student learning that experience
by the students.
RESEARCH RESPONDENTS
The respondents of the study were the students of PNHS having 2 sections in every grade
level. The researcher team went to the four grade level starting from grade 7 to grade 10 level ,
we will only select a few
students to answer our questionnaires that has total of 20 respondents
10 males and 10 females . The basis for our selecting grade 7 to grade 10 level because
some students of that grade level are belong to poverty.
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
This study will be conducted at the PNHS . Talisay, Calape, Bohol . The PNHS large
campus and compounds of 15 rooms, the school has Junior High School and Senior High School
offering . The number of teachers in PNHS was 27, 23 female teachers and 4 male teachers. The
school student population are 335 male and 254 female for the JHS and 82 male and 77
female for the SHS .
RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
The researcher used questionnaires in the study. The questionnaire was divided into two
parts; Part 1 include the profile of the respondents and Part 2 include the questions in
the effects of poverty to the academic performance. There are also a question as to effect to the
student academic performance in school.
12
RESEARCH PROCESS
The input covers the basis of profiling of the respondents from PNHS. The process includes
the survey , construction of questionnaire , gathering of data , analyzing of data , interpretation of
data, and presentation of data. The output includes the proposed solution to intervention made or
introduce by the researcher, for the students affected or experienced poverty problem.
GATHERING OF DATA
For gathering data, we will personally go to their respective barangays and do survey and
personal as face to face interview.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT
The statistical measures used is frequency, because of frequency it can help us to know the
students who are belong on poverty level.
The frequency of the each response will be determined the number of the respondents who
will check the particular item .The profile of the respondents will be determined by using the
formula of percentage.
P=F x 100/N
Where:
P = Percentage
F = Frequency
N = Number of respondents

The table above revealed that the students age 15 is the highest number of respondents who
is emotional and sensitive to their situations of being poor. And this shows that being
poor is not a barrier to excel in academic performance and in school activities as well . And
age 12, 13 and 19 are the lowest number of respondents who are not affectedly about
the said problem.Grade 9 is more in number compared to other grade level. Their presentation
about poverty problem, is different.

The table above shows that the 5 male students got 79% of their grades above has the
highest number of respondents from the grade 9 students. And 90% of the grades gets into 2nd
place while the 80% ,83% and 89% get into 3rd place and the 4th place is the 92% of the grade
and lastly the lowest grade of the respondents got were 77% , 78% , 82% and 86% of the grade.
In other words, belonging into poverty does not affect their students grades but give them
strength to excel in class. There are few cases of the poverty problem to school got line of seven
as their first quarter GPA , but it still a passing grade. It reveals that , the students who are
experiencing poverty problem are not totally affected of the said problem.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION
This study summarizes the entire investigation of the research study.
The first part summarizes the statement of the problem, the procedure in gathering the data and
validating , tabulating and presenting the
data gathered . The second
part
give
the
recommendations and a proposed awareness program based on the results on findings of the
study.
Summary of Findings
This study was conducted to determine the effects of poverty in relation to the students
learning or academic performance in school. These research study utilized the descriptive
survey method of gathering the response of the respondents using the self- made questionnaires
as the data collection instrument, the findings of the study is the basis for conclusions,
recommendations, and the intervention program for the students, who are affected with poverty
problem.
The study revealed that students are also doing good in their study, for they believe
that being poor is not a hindrance/barrier to excel in their learnings/academic performance
because they work hard to maintain their grades even it’s hard for them to achieve.
CONCLUSION
In view of the aforementioned, the following conclusions were drawn.
Most of the 10 students of PNHS experienced poverty problem were the grade
9 students, which we can see that they has the highest number of respondents because they are
belong to a poor family.
22
There is 1 female and 1 male from grade 7, 3 females from grade 8, 5 male and 5 female
from grade 9 and 4 male and 1 female from grade 10 with the total number of 20 respondents,
from the students of PNHS, who cooperated in this study. They said that they belong on poverty
level because they lack of money .
Based on the results we conclude that the negative effect of poverty problem affect
their personal lives because they lack focus to their study. It was found out that, although it
brought negative effects to their learnings/academic performance in school, but it is not a
hindrance/barrier in exceling in school, in other words it didn’t affect their academic
achievement in school, totally.

CHAPTER IV
PROPOSED INTERVENTION PLAN
Title: Poverty Reduction Program
Objective:
Generally, this proposed intervention plan is to give insight and awareness of the students
who really experience poverty problem. Specifically, this aims to achieve the following:
1) to discuss to the students to be aware on poverty problem.
2) to give them insights how to fight poverty.
3) to let them realize that may good things will happen even they encounter
poverty.
Rationale:
One of the most common problem in school and in the society is the problem regarding
“poverty” . Wilkepedia defines poverty, it’s
state of
not
having
enough
material
possessions or income for a person's basic needs. Absolute poverty is the complete lack of
the
means necessary to meet basic personal needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter.
The researcher designed this intervention program for the students who are really affected
with poverty problem. As we observed during the conduct of the study ,there are few student
really affected and still on the process of accepting the reality that they belong on that
level, still it is a must that the students undergoing in the process must be properly guided.
25
The guardian of the said students must also be aware of the emotional carry on that their
children are facing in their lives. This program is not only limited to the student’s awareness but
also to their respective guardians if possible. It is to prevent hope and prayers of the researchers
that this intervention program can result a very positive output that may serve to the students
who face the same problem.
Purpose:
This proposed intervention program entitled “Poverty Reduction Program” is a great
method to help the poor students and for accepting to those students who encounter the same
problem . This program should be implemented, in order to effectively accomplish it’s goals of
reducing the negative effect of
the poverty to the students learning. Preventing the
occurrence of the same problem in the future, the program leads by the researcher through
the series of task that made them aware of the extent of poverty problem to the academic
performance of the students.

Learned Ideas:
By this program, it can help lessen and prevent students who belongs to poverty
in Pangangan National High School. And by promoting the rules and regulations teachers
and students will be aware in the problem. Example having respect for those students who
were experience poverty.
The most important is that we can express our deep respect and love from them and
and treating them as family itself and their academic performance will not be affected with
the different factors cited.
At the classroom level, a curriculum that promotes cooperation, communication, and
friendships and includes lessons and activities stressing emphaty, anger management, and
conflict resolutions skills. Every students must have respect for those students belong to
poverty. These rules are we will show how to love and respect other students feeling, we will try
to help students who are experience this kind of problem to be independent and stand up to
every academic learnings.
