This type of research utilized the descriptive survey method and used questionnaire-checklist as research instrument in gathering data about poverty and it’s effects of the students learning of Pangangan National High School grade 7, grade 8, grade 9 and grade 10 students. There were 2 respondents from grade 7 , 3 respondents from grade 8, 10 respondents from grade 9 and 5 respondents from grade 10. And the result of the study shows from PNHS,are not fully affected with the problem of poverty. Based from the results of this study, although poverty is a problem that gave negative effects to their personal life as a student, but it was found out that belonging in poverty level didn’t affect their academic achievement in school. However, it made them brave and gave them strength to deal and cope unpleasant situations in life, thus the students identified as a poor. Otherwise, it made them stronger to excel their performance or learning in school. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Global poverty is one of the worst problem that the world facing and people are often hungry , have much less access to education, regularly have no light at night and suffer from much poorer health . To make progress against poverty is therefore one of the most urgent goals . Global inequality is one of the major scenario , it strikes many people as inherently unfair that some people are able to enjoy healthy , wealthy , happy lives while others continue to live in ill health , poverty and sorrow . (www.google.com.ph) Poverty most of all affects students through the different modes of their education and also their health . For the students who live in poverty is not easy for them to come to school . Poverty affects the students learning , it leads to poor physical health and skills will never be discover, for the sudents ability to focus and remember the information is slow , and less attentive in class . It affects their grades and the whole performance in school .(www.childfund.org) In todays generation , many students are affected on poverty . Poverty directly affects the learning capacity of the students due to lack of resources available for the students success but their many ways to cope with . Example ; A poor students may find a part time job that suite their skills so that they can buy their wants and needs in school . In a long run , the poor students lack time for bet fails , base by him/her school . 2 During the past years , we know that some students in Pangangan National High School who were force to stop in school because of poverty . Less family income can effect the students learning capacity in school . Some students think that they need to stop schooling because they were a victim of bullying due to poverty . Related emotional and intellectual hopelessness and frustrations are some behavioral effects of poverty to some students . The researchers aim to conduct this study ; to gain information about the effects of poverty to students and how they their schooling and what will be the effect of this situation if they have limited money for the expenses to the academic purposes . Many of the sudents belong to poor family but theres a lot of government who helped their financial needs and give scholarschip to the students . Like Human Development and Poverty Reduction Cluster and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (CCT) . As a researcher the reason why we like to conduct this research is to know the fellow students and teachers how poverty affects to our daily life and sharing what we’ve learned about the poverty . We the researcher , would like to study on the effects of poverty as a problem to students in their learning capacity . Objectives : a) To find out the effects of poverty to the students of Pangangan National High School. b) To know what year level are the highest drop out that most affected with poverty problem . c) To determine the effects of poverty of students learning capacity. 3 THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Children raised in poverty have crucial needs met than their prosperous peers are and , as a result , are subject to some grave consequences . In many poor househoulds , parental education is substandard , time is short , and warm emotions are at a premium . ( Feldman and Eidelman 2009 ; Kearney , 1997 ; Segawa 2008 ) . Caregivers tend to overworked , overstressed , and Authoritarian with children , using the same harsh disciplinary strategies used by their own parents . They often lack warmth and sensitivity ( Evans 2004 ) and fail to form solid , healthy relationship with their children ( Annert , Pinquart and Lamb , 2006 ) . Psychologically, student who grow up poor , suffer more negative emotions when they Become adult . According to Science Daily ( 2013 ) , it states that ; researcher found that test subjects who had lower family incomes at age 9 exhibited , as adult , greater activity in the amyglada , an area in the brain known for its role in fear and other negative emptions . These individuals showed less activity in areas of the prefontal cartex , an area in the brain though to regulate negative emotions . In congruence , as these children grow up they come to realize that they are poor and start wondering even yet during their tender years , why they are in such a situation and not the same way they saw with some children who are clean , well dressed , well fed and being taken cared of by their maids off to school and back home . And so as they grow older , a poor children always thinking about why and what makes them poor and to feel discriminated , bullied , etc . , and encountered many trouble . 4 Just like in Pangangan Island , people experienced hardship because they lack money to provide their education , lack of food , unstable home to live and some of the parents have no enough money to support their needs and just rely on what the government will provide . So other children just stop studying and find some work to live on . Others stopped because of losing hope for to sustain online class . However , government provides some basic needs for the unfortunate people yet still can’t enough of it cause most of them have a large family members . In congruence with the situation , government will always provide and make a way to help needy people . In some cases the first thing that can be a reason of drop out / absenteism in school is family problem . It is a sensitive topic that can affect the life of the students . Second is financial problem . Money is everything ; money can do a lot of things and one of those things is education . Third is health and well being of a young school children . Inadequate of medical care and poor nutrition affect a child’s physical and cognitive development . Lastly is the mobility , the ability to provide stable housing . Students move from one location to another because their parents are in search of work or are dealing with other issues that require them to move . Learning capacity means that the physical structure of your brain , including neural networks that determine how well you can think just like your memory , attention , speed of processing and ability to sequence ideas . with capacity you will be able to do particular thing . But study related that a poor school child is having a hard time to cope with what is being thought in school . Learning capacity it is a measure of a student’s abilities ‘ , skills , and expertise in a curriculum area . (www.igi-global.com) 5 Poverty and its relationschip to academic success are also attributed to the lack of community resources , education resources ,and stress . Students living in poverty do not receive the same access to resources and therefore struggle to achieve at the same level of those student who are not economically disadvantage . And also poverty affects academic performance in the sense that it limits the access to different opportunities . However , one can also learn to resourceful in order to fill what is lacking . Intitutions and governance in the poverty response from pursuing growth in the period immediately following the second world war ,the government of the Philippines transferred its development strategy toward poverty reduction in the 1970’s and 1980’s . Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan ( KALAHI ) is still the current administrations that are over arching framework and Strategy aimed at reducing poverty , improving governance and empowering communities . Its core strategies include the following : ACCELARATED ASSET REFORMS : A redistribution of physical or financial assets to the poorest individuals , and programs that improve access to land and capital and sustain the long-term ownership of these productive factors to marginalized groups . IMPROVED ACCESS TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT SERVICES : Programs that provide basic human services ( basic , education , health and nutrition , shelter , water , and sanitation ) to strengthen the human capital base . PROVISION OF EMPLOYMENT AND LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES : Public avenue for job creation and microfinance avenues . 6 SECURITY FROM VIOLENCE AND SOCIAL PROTECTION ( INCLUDING SAFETY NETS FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS : Reduced risk of the poor and marginalized sectors and strengthened opportunities for them to participate in mainstream economic and political processes. INSTITUTIONALIZED AND STRENGTHENED PARTICIPATION OF THE BASIC SECTORS IN GOVERNANCE : Strengthen opportunities to participate in mainstream economic and political processes . PRO-POOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT : Protects the rights of the affected people . According to ( Lister , 2004 ) , poverty is generally explained as the scarcity or the situation in which a person lacks a certain amount of material possesions or money . If is a condition in which community or a persons lacks the essential needs to enjoy a minimum standard of living in the society . ( Johnson , Riis and Noble 2009 ) stated , that children living in poverty see many chronic stressors , some of the examples are unsafe neigbourhoods where there are lots of crime , parents who have low income where they can’t provide the needs of their children , parents who are separated or divorce or siblings that living in different households , and households that areovercrowded . All of the example above creates problem in the lives of children who are raised in poverty and results in academic and behavioral issues in school . 7 In addition , poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods . Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition , limited access to education and other basic services , social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Tony Atkinson said , inequality of outcomes amongs today’s generation is the source of advantage received by the next generation . If we are concerned about inequality of opportunity tomorrow . We need to be concerned about inequality of outcome today . Sir Tony Atkinson was centenia professor at the London school of Economics and Fellow of Nuffield College , Oxford . He was long been at the forefront of research on inequality , and bring his theoretical and practical experience to bear on its diverse problems . He presents a comprehensive set of policies that could bring a genuine shift distribution of income in developed countries . (ourworldindata.com and www.google.com.ph ) LEGAL BASIS Republic Act 11310 knowm as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Act, allows the establishment of programs that invest and harness the country’s human capital and improvement of delivery of basic services to the poor , particularly education, health and nutrition to break intergenerational cycle of poverty . Through this Act , it is a vital because it helps many poor Filipinos to end poverty and live a better life . It also gives hope to each and everyone to be more comfortable especially parents having a children who still studying . They build a program called 4ps or PANTAWID PAMILYANG PILIPINO PROGRAM as some of the students who studying in Pangangan 8 National High School and also my cogroupmates has been part of this program it gives them a chance to continue study and they felt grateful because this program help a lot of them where government provides conditional cash transfer to poor household for a maximum period of 7 years to improve the health, nutrition and education aspect of their lives . Talisay , Calape , Bohol .This study is conducted to answer the following questions ; 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of ; A . age B . sex C . grade level D . economic status 2. What year level are the highest number of dropped outand absences due to poverty ? 3. What is the academic performance of the students who belong to poverty level ? 4. Based on the findings , what recommendation maybe proposed? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY TTT This research is beneficial to the following group of people . For us researcher , it help us determine how our fellow students experience poverty and to know the situation of their studying inside the classroom . This research can helped the students of Pangangan National High School who belong to poverty level for them to know they can following ; handle the effects of poverty , effectively. This study is important to the 10 FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR - This study will give insights to them to offer local scholarships to poor but deserving students , that students will continue to finish with their study because of the local scholarship introduced by them, thus reducing the number of illetivate in the community. FOR TEACHER -They can establish an environment where every student is accecpted and nothing less than the best is tolerated . Find the positive in every students and every situation . Provide opportunities for educators to learn more about student who live in poverty . FOR PARENTS – This will give them an idea to give their children financial needs by give their children opportunity to set their achievements. FOR STUDENTS – This is really important for the students to know the effects to the student learning capacity , so that they are aware of this kind of problem to lessen the doubts on their mind . However , the students will be motivated to study harder , because the school personnel are willing to help them . FOR FUTURE RESEARCHER – This study can help for them to know the effects of poverty to the learning capacity of the students and this study may serve as a guide for them. SCOPE AND LIMITATION AND DELIMINATION This study will conducted at PNHS with the grade 7 students to grade 10 students as our respondents . This study is limited to the students who belong to poverty level . For poverty in this research is limited to students lack of finances needed for this study. 11 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY RESEARCH DESIGN This research used a descriptive survey method using self-made questionnaires . It is design to gather information about poverty and its effects of the student learning that experience by the students. RESEARCH RESPONDENTS The respondents of the study were the students of PNHS having 2 sections in every grade level. The researcher team went to the four grade level starting from grade 7 to grade 10 level , we will only select a few students to answer our questionnaires that has total of 20 respondents 10 males and 10 females . The basis for our selecting grade 7 to grade 10 level because some students of that grade level are belong to poverty. RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT This study will be conducted at the PNHS . Talisay, Calape, Bohol . The PNHS large campus and compounds of 15 rooms, the school has Junior High School and Senior High School offering . The number of teachers in PNHS was 27, 23 female teachers and 4 male teachers.The school student population are 335 male and 254 female for the JHS and 82 male and 77 female for the SHS . RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS The researcher used questionnaires in the study. The questionnaire was divided into two parts; Part 1 include the profile of the respondents and Part 2 include the questions in the effects of poverty to the academic performance. There are also a question as to effect to the student academic performance in school. 12 RESEARCH PROCESS The input covers the basis of profiling of the respondents from PNHS. The process includes the survey , construction of questionnaire , gathering of data , analyzing of data , interpretation of data, and presentation of data. The output includes the proposed solution to intervention made or introduce by the researcher, for the students affected or experienced poverty problem. GATHERING OF DATA For gathering data, we will personally go to their respective barangays and do survey and personal as face to face interview. STATISTICAL TREATMENT The statistical measures used is frequency, because of frequency it can help us to know the students who are belong on poverty level. The frequency of the each response will be determined the number of the respondents who will check the particular item .The profile of the respondents will be determined by using the formula of percentage. P=F x 100/N Where: P = Percentage F = Frequency N = Number of respondents 13 DEFINITION OF TERMS The researcher lists some words found in the research study in order for the readers to understand more about the research. ABSENTEISM. The usual behavior of the students who belong to poor family. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. Refers to how poverty a child can perform in the school measured in terms of their grade. ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT. DROP OUT.Quit schooling due to lack of money to sustain schooling. EFFECTS. FRUSTRATED . Negative feeling on the failure to accomplish something due to poverty. LEARNING. POOR. Lacking sufficient money to supply necessary thing for education, it is one of the reasons of students inhability to learn. POVERTY . States of being poor, that majority of the students are suffering and facing. STUDENTS. 14 CHAPTER II Presentations, Analysis and Interpretations of the Data This chapter deals with the presentations, analysis and interpretation of the gathered data, from the conduct of the study. The first part presents the profile of the students in terms of of age, gender and grade level . The next sections of this papers, presents the academic performance, base on the first grading or quarter as basis if the problem at hand really affect the students. And this shows that being poor is not a barrier to excel in academic performance and in school activities as well . And age 12, 13 and 19 are the lowest number of respondents who are not affectedly about the said problem.Grade 9 is more in number compared to other grade level. And 90% of the grades gets into 2nd place while the 80% ,83% and 89% get into 3rd place and the 4th place is the 92% of the grade and lastly the lowest grade of the respondents got were 77% , 78% , 82% and 86% of the grade. In other words, belonging into poverty does not affect their students grades but give them strength to excel in class. There are few cases of the poverty problem to school got line of seven as their first quarter GPA , but it still a passing grade. This part of the research represents the response of the grade 7, grade 8, grade 9 and grade 10 students of PNHS, were they answer the questionnaire given by the researcher to gather data. In the table above there were 30 questions made using the following scales 19 Always(A) with 4 value,Oftentimes(O) if 3 value,Sometimes(S) if 2 value,Occasionally(OC) if 1 value and Never(N) if 0 value. The total highest response of number is statement number 4 which has the weighted mean of 3.75, stated “Lack self confidence”, this revealed that it can affects students academic performance in school, it’s affects self confidence to talk with people, this also shows that the students need to overcome this problem as one caused of being poor. The second statement is number 15 which has the weighted mean of 3.45, which stated “I feel anxious with other people”. There is a degree of comparison on the situation they experience, thus it is hurting on their part and they feel that they never belong to the group, because they are poor. The third statement is number 1 & 25 in which this two has the same weighted mean of 3.20, stated “Spending time alone” and “Finding excuses to stay away from the people in the classroom” as a result of being lack self confidence to talk with classmates or the fellow students. Students who are poor not able to go with other, they rather wanted to be alone. The fourth statement are the number 12,23, 24 and 30 which has the same weighted mean of 3.15, which stated that “I became independent” , “I engage in work to provide something” , “I feel anxious and not sure of my future” and “ I lack resources to provide my needs at school” because of students who belong to being poor. Majority of the the poor family tend to engage to work, to have extra income which can be used for school needs. The fifth one is statement number 10 and 29 in which this two has the same weighted time alone” and “I am emotional and sensitive mean of 3.05, which stated “Spending to my situations of being poor”, due to the reasons of being poor and experiences of lack income and also living in the 20 poverty level looses ones self confidence with the fear that they are rejected by others. Oftentimes they have lessen friends. The highest responses of the respondents in descriptive value in described the in table is the scale often it revealed the student’s response is the questionnaires manifested in majority cases. The total composite mean of 2.96 which under to sometimes. The table revealed there are different kinds of effects in the students who are belong to poor family. There are different weighted mean but were just consider the top 5 highest number of responses. It shows that the most highest in responses and weighted mean is number 1 “ lack self confidence” and it reveals that its affect most of their performance in school which is due to poverty. 21 CHAPTER III SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION This study summarizes the entire investigation of the research study. The first part summarizes the statement of the problem, the procedure in gathering the data and validating , tabulating and presenting the data gathered . The second part give the recommendations and a proposed awareness program based on the results on findings of the study. Summary of Findings This study was conducted to determine the effects of poverty in relation to the students learning or academic performance in school. These research study utilized the descriptive survey method of gathering the response of the respondents using the self- made questionnaires as the data collection instrument, the findings of the study is the basis for conclusions, recommendations, and the intervention program for the students,who are affected with poverty problem. The study revealed that students are also doing good in their study, for they believe that being poor is not a hindrance/barrier to excel in their learnings/academic performance because they work hard to maintain their grades even it’s hard for them to achieve. CONCLUSION In view of the aforementioned,the following conclusions were drawn. Most of the 10 students of PNHS experienced poverty problem were the grade 9 students, which we can see that they has the highest number of respondents because they are belong to a poor family. 22 There is 1 female and 1 male from grade 7, 3 females from grade 8, 5 male and 5 female from grade 9 and 4 male and 1 female from grade 10 with the total number of 20 respondents, from the students of PNHS, who cooperated in this study. They said that they belong on poverty level because they lack of money . Based on the results we conclude that the negative effect of poverty problem affect their personal lives because they lack focus to their study. It was found out that, although it brought negative effects to their learnings/academic performance in school, but it is not a hindrance/barrier in exceling in school, in other words it didn’t affect their academic achievement in school, totally. RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the findings and conclusions, the following measures are suggested as the researcher recommendation study. Students 1. Students must not bully other students who are poor. 2. Students must not reject the school tasks due to poverty. 3. Students must need more confidence to do their tasks in school. 4. Students must need to love what they’re doing, be positive and have self-esteem. 5. Students must adopt a positive mental attitude. 23 Teachers 1.Teachers must monitor the behavior and actions of a student’s towards the poverty problem, in order for them to give special guidance, attention and compassion that the students of that problem, may feel the concern of the teachers for them. 2.Teachers must help their students reach their full potential. 3.Teachers need to give opportunities to their students to give them hope to make it their tasks properly. 4.Teachers must be transparent and ready to help their students. 5.Teachers must help their students to succeed mainly by boosting their onfidence so that they feel empowered to devise their own strategies for success. Parents 1.Parents must monitor the behavior and actions of their children to be aware what kind of problem their children have. 2.Parents need to provide the guidance that helps their children to change grow and be matured. 3.Parents must need to support their children for what they want to do. 4.Parents must teach their children the foundation for success. 5.Parents must recognize and praise their child for any struggles and adversities. 24 CHAPTER IV PROPOSED INTERVENTION PLAN Title: Poverty Reduction Program Objective: Generally, this proposed intervention plan is to give insight and awareness of the students who really experience poverty problem. Specifically, this aims to achieve the following: 1) to discuss to the students to be aware on poverty problem. 2) to give them insights how to fight poverty. 3) to let them realize that may good things will happen even they encounter poverty. Rationale: One of the most common problem in school and in the society is the problem regarding “poverty” . Wilkepedia defines poverty, it’s state of not having enough material possessions or income for a person's basic needs. Absolute poverty is the complete lack of the means necessary to meet basic personal needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter. (https://en.wikipedia.org) . The researcher designed this intervention program for the students who are really affected with poverty problem. As we observed during the conduct of the study ,there are few student really affected and still on the process of accepting the reality that they belong on that level,still it is a must that the students undergoing in the process must be properly guided. 25 The guardian of the said students must also be aware of the emotional carry on that their children are facing in their lives. This program is not only limited to the student’s awareness but also to their respective guardians if possible. It is to prevent hope and prayers of the researchers that this intervention program can result a very positive output that may serve to the students who face the same problem. Purpose: This proposed intervention program entitled “Poverty Reduction Program” is a great method to help the poor students and for accepting to those students who encounter the same problem . This program should be implemented, in order to effectively accomplish it’s goals of reducing the negative effect of the poverty to the students learning.
