Taking more times than prescribed Types of Drugs Drugs: Illegal Substances (Street Drugs) There are over 2,000 chemical compounds in marijuana once it is lit. THC is the main active chemical and is stored in fat cells for long periods of time (stored up to 30 days) THC can also be stored in brain, lungs, ovaries, and testes. THC content is rising 1960’s THC level = 1-2% Today THC level = 21% It is stronger and more damaging!!! Hallucinations and Paranoia Impaired memory, reaction time, concentration and coordination Distorted sense of time, sight, touch and sound Decreased ambition Bloodshot eyes Dry Mouth Lung irritation; Coughing Weakens Immune System Increased appetite; weight gain Increase of stillbirths and birth defects Changes hormone level; affecting body development Females: increases testosterone levels, risk of infertility Males: lowers sperm count and testosterone levels Raises levels of dopamine-produces a pleasurable feeling. Can be intense. Can wear off dramatically-Crash Users get addicted to the dopamine release (intense pleasurable feeling) It is known that marijuana causes a psychological addiction Develops rapidly - Disappears rapidly Withdrawal Symptoms DO occur in some marijuana users: restlessness aches/pains depression sweating difficulty concentrating shaky hands irritability mild agitation insomnia sleep disturbances nausea and cramping decreased appetite drug craving Marijuana, Tobacco and Alcohol are all considered Gateway drugs. It is an indicator that if any of the three have been used it is a good possibility that the user will move on to use more dangerous and addictive drugs. This does NOT mean that every person will do this. AKA: "K2" or "kind." It's cheap It isn't regulated It causes serious impairment It can have severe side affects. Spice abusers who have been taken to Poison Control Centers report symptoms that include: - rapid heart rate - vomiting - agitation - confusion - hallucinations - Spice can also raise blood pressure and cause reduced blood supply to the heart, which causes heart attacks AKA: “bath powder,” “herbal incense,” or “plant food.” - What makes the term “bath salts” more confusing, is that the name is used for a surprisingly large number of different chemical combinations. - To understand what the drug does, think of “bath salts” as a cross between meth and acid. - Delusional beliefs acted upon in violent ways. CLASS PROJECT Create a PowerPoint Presentation. It must have a minimum 5 slides. You can either research a medicine or a drug, but pick only ONE. Be creative as possible. Cite your sources.
