the middle ages
• Bishops sat in the House of Lords
• They could raise an army in times of
war
• The Archbishop would crown the
King/Queen
• People gave the church 1/10th of their
earnings - Tithe
• In 1300 many people chose a career in
the Church or in a monastery – 1 in 20
townspeople was a cleric (Someone
who leads religious services)

It helped people read and
write by providing school
It helped the poor
The Church helped people
get to Heaven
It gave comfort to people’s
lives and helped them with
the promise of Heaven
There were no hotels so
often they would give food
and shelter to travellers
It made breaks in working
days by having Holy days
It held services so that people
could pray to God and people
could confess their sins
The Parish Priest
• The parish priest was appointed by
the lord of the manor and was given a
house.
• He was obliged to carry money for
alms (charity) with him, keep up the
church, and provide hospitality to
travellers.
• He earned his living from the income
for parish lands, fees for services,
and tithe money.
• The priest was very involved with the
community
