Betrayal
Due to selfish and selfless intentions, treachery happens, which leads to the secret being
revealed.
Morgan decided to cut aspects of Angus' life out of his retelling of their storey to stop the
trauma connected with the past.
Miles' friendship with Angus is much more unique than his relationship with Morgan. On his
return home from World War II, Morgan has owned the farm for the past thirty years. A tale that
he has been ritualistically retelling nonstop for the past three decades is at the core of his
friendship with the other older man. The tragic crux of the play is Miles' realisation that the truth
of this plot is that it is a total hoax. Miles and Angus were having a talk in the kitchen when
Miles realized that Angus could not remember anything, but he is very good at memorizing
numbers and can add them up with no effort. (Miles: “Angus? Twelve, fifty-six, one-oh-seven,
twelve again and six seventy-nine”, Angus: “Eight hundred, sixty-six” (Healey The drawer
boy)). Miles sneaks downstairs to the kitchen, where Angus and morgan were sitting. Morgan
was telling Angus the story of the two English girls. Mills retrieved his notebook and overheard
their conversation. Angus recognized a part of the story and answered with “Right. My Sally
My….Sally. Your? ”. Miles retreated to his room until later that night where he found Angus in
the kitchen. He was still writing down his notes for the play while Angus was looking for
something in the kitchen. A couple of days pass by when Morgan and Angus come back from
watching miles play. Angus was very excited that he remembered a lot of the resemblance
between him and the play. He knew it was Morgan and him in the play, he wanted to see more
of the play, but Morgan cut him off and asked him if they wanted a sandwich? Angus replied
quickly with, “Sure, I’ll tell you, Morgan, that was just … I saw…”. Morgan didn’t like that
Angus started to remember things and piece together the story, so he tried to intervene in his
thought process again and asked him if he had a new total. A few days later, Angus sees a picture
in his head from the past he called it the “tallest spot,” but Morgan refused to drive to this spot.
So Miles confronts him why he will not take him to the place? Morgan answered, which is
between him and me. Angus was in agony, he was begging Morgan to with him there, but with
no luck. Angus disappeared
With the assistance of farm beginner Miles, Angus starts to know he is being deceived.
Angus ran to the yard and disappeared because everything became too much for him. Mills and
Morgan were worried about where Angus could have gone to. In the meantime, Morgan and
Miles got caught up in an argument. “I will do it. Go. Alternatively, I will call the cops and send
them up there for him.” Morgan did not like this idea; he still refused to go up there and get
Angus. Miles tries to explain to morgan that it is not right to lie to Angus about his past.
Morgan’s reaction was the same as always. He tries to get Miles to leave the house again, “You
get out of here,” but then Angus came back from his short trip. Morgan wanted to talk to Angus
alone without Miles interrupting, so he asked Miles to leave them alone. Morgan was worried
about morgan. He asked him what happened to his arm, but Angus did not respond. Morgan
went up to make Angus a sandwich as he was indeed hungry. Angus was telling Morgan what
happened to him when he went for a walk and that a voice has been talking to him, it said: “He
killed your father. He married your mum”. This answer frightened Morgan because this was not
true what Angus has been saying. He told Morgan that he was just pretending as Miles taught
him, but he knows that Morgan has been lying to him. Morgan does not deny this accusation, and
he even tells Angus that he has been lying to him. Angus got a bit upset about Morgan lying to
him. “Oh, okay. You lied. You are a bastard.” He insists that Miles tells him the story.
When Angus realized he was being deceived, he still chooses to believe in his own truth
rather than in the absolute truth
Angus starts to remember many different scenarios now. Morgan is able to persuade Angus by
reminding him about their life over and over again. However, Miles quickly discovers that the
women who loved them and accompanied them to Canada to be with them were all made up by
Morgan. About the fact that he realizes he must not tell Angus the actual storey in person, he
agrees to retell their tragic storey in the play he is composing. As a result of this, Angus’s
memories are triggered, and he and Miles continue to exchange personalities in distinct
alternative realities. When Miles leaves to go for his rehearsal, Angus tells him to use the
“story,” but then Angus already forgot again what he was talking about a few seconds before. So
he tells Morgan again: “That was Miles. He is here staying with you and me while he puts on a
play about farming. You told him awful stories.” This states again that Angus has or wants to
forget the absolute truth. So Angus goes and makes a sandwich for Morgan while Morgan goes
and checks up on the cows that have been allegedly “milked by Miles.” He quickly realizes that
the cows have not been hand milked, but that they have been, in fact, been milked by the milking
machine. Angus is was staring at a drawing where they used to live.
Conclusion
The truth is always more brutal to hear, as it's not always what people want to hear. Friends try
to be truthful, but when a lie is easier to hear, they tell beautiful lies to crypt the lies. The truth is
a theme in The Drawer Boy. It is a reality that people go through hardships, that the world puts
up obstacles for people to overcome things in their lives. In the play, Morgan tells Angus stories
about their friendship, The love of their lives, and the war. Morgan believed he was being a good
friend, protecting Angus from his past pain, as he knew that the truth would hurt him. It begins to
take a toll on Morgan when the truth comes up, and it becomes hard to confront what is actually
real. It shows that hard work does not always equal a reward, and Miles learns that the
government takes most of what the farms should be making. Some face the reality of months
where they are unable to afford repairs or general needs for the farm. The play ends with the
brothers looking out for one another. The hardships that the characters face sends a message to
the readers.
