HOMEMADE SEWN MASKS
A GUIDE ON MAKING MASKS FOR EVERYDAY USE BY CITIZENS
1. Choosing the best material!
2. How should you cut the material?
The best material that can be found around
your home is a white cotton t-shirt or pillow
case. White is good because it shows dirt.
Other material that can be purchased is cottonblend or cotten-linen-blend.
You should cut your material into a 6 x 4 inch
rectangle. You can adjust the size of the rectangle
dependent on the size of your face. It is best for
your mask to have 2 layers of material.
3. If you're using a sewing
machine, these tips will help!
Make sure that all folded edges are sewn
together so that no air or moisture can enter
the mask!
It's important to use cotton thread.
Remember, it doesn't have
to be perfect,
it just has to
PROTECT you.
5. Who should you share them with?
FAMILY
FRIENDS
NEIGHBOURS
COMMUNITY
MEMBERS
*Medical Professionals
are advised to wear
medical grade masks
instead of homemade
masks.
Cut "U" shapes in either side of
the mask if you're not using a
sewing machine or
elastic straps.
You mask must fit snugly against
your face!
4. If you're making the mask by hand,
these tips will help!
Make sure everything is
folded properly before
sewing!
Pin all sections of the mask
together.
Use a ruler or a straightedge to mark where should
be stitched.
6. Tips on caring for your mask!
Wash after every use! Hand wash with
hot water and soap or use a washing
machine if you have access to one. It's
good to also iron your mask.
Don't touch your eyes, nose or
mouth while wearing and while
removing your mask.
Wash your hands for at least 20
seconds after removing your mask.
