THE THREE DAY FEAST THAT INSPIRED THANKSGIVING
Your research team has been chosen by the Smithsonian to piece together what
resources the settlers of Plymouth Colony needed for their voyage to America and what items
were consumed during the three day feast with the Wampanoag tribe. All you have to piece
together the resources are pieces burned journal entries from the Mayflower’s captain. Use
these entries to calculate what resources the Plymouth settlers used. Your teacher will tell you
how long you have to complete this assignment. If your team fails the Smithsonian will pull all
funding from your New England Early settlers documentary that you have been researching
your entire college career to produce.
Do not be afraid to create your own equivalency statements!
You have a fact sheet that you need to use to help figure out how to solve the problems.
Think carefully, read carefully. Good luck!
1.
“We have finally booked voyage on the Mayflower heading to the New World. We
have about seven days to get the ship ready. I have calculated that there will be 47
men, 32 women and 22 children total on the 66 day voyage. My sailors and I are
collecting the water using jugs to store in the water barrels.”
How many barrels of water will the Mayflower need to sustain 101 people across the
ocean for 66 days?

2.
“We need to store food for our voyage that
will not spoil for 66 days. The best we can
come with is potatoes and cabbage. The men
can fish to bring in fish for protein.”
How many boxes of potatoes does the Mayflower need if each person gets 3 potatoes a
day?
How many burlap bags of cabbage need to be stored if each person will receive 4 cups
of cooked shredded cabbage per day?
3.
Upon arrival we needed to hunt in this new land. We only
had five rifles and they needed 50 grams of gunpowder to be
shot once. We only have 15 pounds of gunpowder. It is taking
six shots to kill one of these wild turkeys.
How many turkeys can be shot with 15 pounds of gunpowder?

4.
We became acquainted with the people who call
themselves Wampanoag, they are very skilled gardeners
and bowman. They gave us 2.75 lbs of corn seeds in
exchange for a wool blanket.
How many individual seeds were exchanged for 40 wool blankets?
5.
After months of help from the Wampanoag people, we decided to organize a
feast together. Our 101 Englishman with their 278 native peoples. The
Wampanoag women guided our mothers and children to a wild apple
orchard. Using flour the women began to prepare apple pies for the three
day feast.
How many pounds of apples are needed to create enough pies for each person to have
one slice during the three-day feast?
How many cotton bags of flour will be needed to bake the pies?

6.
The Wampanoag men organized to go out on a deer hunt. They wanted to bring
back enough venison from the Northeastern deer for the feast. We thought
everyone would do well with a bushel sized portion of smoked deer meat each day,
although 43 of our guests do not eat flesh.
How many deer are needed for the three day feast?
7.
While forging in the forest the children came across a wild orange gourd
patch. There were 72 fresh gourds found. The women decided to see if they
could create pumpkin pies to add to the dessert table.
How many ounces of spices and pounds of orange gourds would they need to make
enough pies for all the attendees? Can they add the orange gourd pies to the menu?
How many pies can they make using all 72 gourds?

!!!!!!!!!EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!!
1/3 of the English and Wampanoag people have come down
with a cold or possibly flu and are all in bed. I have a half a
satchel of elderberries left to make an infusion. I’m not sure
but I believe 35 grams can treat at least 3 people.
Does the captain have enough Elderberry to treat the invalids?
