اﻻﺳﻢ /ﻧﻮره اﺣﻤﺪ اﻟﺰﻫﺮاﻧﻲ Practical 4 : General chemistry I The objective of this part is the Detection of Acid Radical Salt Salt No ( 1 ) Physical properties : 1- Shape : Powder 2- Color : White 3- Solubility : Soluble in cold water II- Chemical properties Experiment Solid salt + dil . HCI Observation Effervescence colorless Confirmatory tests : 1 Salt solution + magnesium sulphate solution Salt solution + mercuric chloride solution White precipitate of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3 ) Reddish brown precipitate of mercuric carbonate ( HgCO3 ) III- Name of the acid radical : Carbonate Indication The gas is CO2 odorless gas is evolved . The anion is carbonate or bicarbonate The anion is carbonate The anion is carbonate Its symbol : co3 Practical 4 : General chemistry I The objective of this part is the Detection of Acid Radical Salt Salt No ( 2 ) Physical properties : 1- Shape : Powder 2- Color : White 3- Solubility : Soluble in cold water -2 II- Chemical properties Experiment Solid salt + dil . HCI Observation Effervescence and a colorless odorless gas is evolved. Confirmatory tests : 1 Salt solution + magnesium sulphate solution No ppt. in the cold, as magnesium bicarbonate is soluble, but heating, white ppt of magnesium carbonate is obtained mercuric No ppt. in the cold , but on heating a reddish-brown ppt. of mercuric carbonate is obtained Salt solution + mercuric chloride solution III- Name of the acid radical : BiCarbonate Indication The gas is CO2 odorless gas is evolved . The anion is carbonate or bicarbonate The anion is bicarbonate The anion is bicarbonate Its symbol : HCO3 Practical 4 : General chemistry I The objective of this part is the Detection of Acid Radical Salt Salt No ( 3 ) Physical properties : 1- Shape : big crystals 2- Color : White 3- Solubility : Soluble in cold water II- Chemical properties Experiment Solid salt + dil . HCI Observation Colourless gas which turns an acidified potassium dichreomate paper green , is evolved, and a yellow Indication The gas is SO2, the ppt. is s and the green colour is Cr2(SO4)3. The anion is thiosulphate Confirmatory 1) Salt solution + lead acetate solution Pb(CH3COO)2 2) Salt solution +2 drops of dil. H2SO4 + Iodine solution(I2) precipitate of sulphur appears. white ppt. of thiosulphate (PbS2O3 ) is formed, the ppt. turns black (PbS) on boiling. The brown colour of the iodine solution disappears, because the iodine is reduced to the iodide ion, which is colourless. At the same time, the thiosulphate is oxidized to tetrathionate III- Name of the acid radical : Thiosulphate The anion is thiosulphate The anion is thiosulphate 2Its symbol : S2O3
