Describe the parts of endocrine and reproductive systems along with their parts and functions. 2. Explain the hormones secreted by the male reproductive system. 3. Explain the hormones secreted by the female reproductive system. 4. Discuss the role of hormones involved in the male and female reproductive system using a video clip. 5. Explain the effect of hormone secretion in the development of an organism. Key Concepts: The Endocrine System 1 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems ACTIVITY NO.1 Hey, That’s My Work!!! Match each hormone in the list below with its specific function. Growth hormone Adrenalin estrogen progesterone insulin thyroxin follicle stimulating hormone prolactin Hormone thymosin testosterone Function Prepares the body for emergency situations. Stimulates development of the ovarian follicle. Controls blood glucose levels. Stimulates the development of the female sexual characteristics. Stimulates the growth and development of young animals. Enables the body to produce certain antibodies. Stimulates the development of male secondary sex characteristics. Contributes to milk production and development of mammary glands. Prepares the lining of the uterus for pregnancy. Regulates body metabolism. Key Concepts: The Reproductive System The system involved in sexual reproduction is called the reproductive system. Its major function is to ensure the survival of species. 2 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems The Male Reproductive The male reproductive system is a group of organs that make up a man’s reproductive and urinary systems. These external organs include the testicles which produces sperm cells and testosterone, scrotum, a sac of skin that holds the testis and the penis that deposits sperms into the vagina during sexual intercourse. Internal organs include the epididymis which transports sperm cells from testes to vas deferens, and into urethra which carries sperm and urine out of the body. Glands like seminal vesicle and prostate that provide and secretes liquid (semen) in which sperm can swim. System The Female Reproductive System The female reproductive system produces female sex cells, receives sperm cells from the male and nurtures the development of and provides nourishment for the new individual. It consists of the ovaries that produces egg cells, oviducts (fallopian tube) where the egg cell and sperm cell unite and fertilization takes place. The uterus serves as the site of egg implantation and where the fertilized egg develops. Vagina receives the penis of male during sexual intercourse. ACTIVITY NO.2 Part A. Put a if the statement is correct, otherwise put a . Place your answer in the space provided before each number. ___1. The urethra is a common passageway for both sperm and urine in the male. ___2. Eggs are produced in the ovaries. ___3. Sperm is produced in the penis. ___4. If fertilization occurs, it usually takes place in the fallopian tube. ___5. The function of scrotum is to hold and support the testes. 3 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems ___6. Vagina is a muscular passageway leading to the outside of the body in that serves as the receptacle of the penis. ___7. The uterus serves as the site of implantation of the fertilized egg, then holds and nourishes the developing embryo. ___8. If the egg cell is fertilized by the sperm, it stayed in the uterus. ___9. The testes are responsible in sperm and testosterone production. ___10. Vas deferens is the passageway of the sperms from the epididymis. Part B Key Concepts: Hormones Secreted by the Male and Female Reproductive System The gonads (sex organs) include the female ovaries and the male testes. In addition to producing gametes, the female ovaries and male testes also secrete a number of hormones (sex hormones) Male sex hormones, as a group, are called androgens. The principal androgen is testosterone, which is secreted by the testes. A small amount is also produced by the adrenal cortex. Production of testosterone begins during fetal development, continues for a short time after birth, nearly ceases during childhood, and then resumes at puberty. This hormone is responsible for: • • • • • The growth and development of the male reproductive structures Increased skeletal and muscular growth Enlargement of the larynx accompanied by voice changes Growth and distribution of body hair Increased male sexual drive Two groups of female sex hormones are produced in the ovaries, the estrogens and progesterone. These hormones contribute to the development and function of the female reproductive organs and sex characteristics. At the onset of puberty, estrogen promotes: • • • The development of the breasts Distribution of fat evidence in the hips, legs, and breast Maturation of reproductive organs such as the uterus and vagina Progesterone causes the uterine lining to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. Together, progesterone and estrogens are responsible for the changes that occur in the uterus during the female menstrual cycle. 4 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems Directions: Watch the video entitled “Gonads - Control and Coordination (CBSE Grade :10 Biology) with the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nhl9EQiftZ0 and complete the table below. For those who do not have internet connection, just read the given concept above or you may watch it whenever you have your data/connection. (The teacher may also provide a summary of the video’s content.) Hormone Location Function (Involved Organ) Male: Female: Key Concepts: Hormones affect various processes in the body as they regulate and balance the functioning of organs, tissues, and cells. Hormones have great impact on your growth, appearance, emotions, and reproductive functions. These determine whether or not you develop disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, or sexual dysfunction. Hormones act in very small amounts. An increase or decrease in hormonal levels may result in body disorder due to hormonal imbalance. ACTIVITY NO.3 Something Went Wrong Direction: Identify the gland in the endocrine system that is responsible in each disorder. Color the part of the human body where these glands are found and explain the effect of hormonal imbalance that was observed. 5 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems Goiter Diabetes _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ _ _______________ _ Dwarfism Gigantism ______________ ________________ ______________ ________________ ______________ ________________ ______________ ________________ _______________ ________________ _ Questions: 1. What condition may arise if the pituitary gland is not producing enough growth hormones? 2. What will happen to a person with too much secretion of growth hormones from the pituitary glands? 3. Why people who suffer from diabetes have high blood glucose levels? 4. Why is there a noticeable swelling in the front part of the neck of a person who has a goiter? 5. How can endocrine disorder affect man’s way of life? You may cite an example. 6 Quarter 3 : Week : 1 Competency Code: S10LT-IIIb-34 Competency: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems REFERENCES: Department of Education.
