Name: _________________________ Body Systems Interactive Lab Complete the following 4 stations in groups of 1-3 and answers all associated questions. Hand this worksheet in at the end of class. STATION 1: Heart Rate & Rate of Breath - Each group member should take their pulse and resting breathing rate (count for 1 minute each). Record yours here: Pulse/Heart Rate: __________ Beats/Minute Breathing Rate: ___________Breaths/minute Now, each person should perform 30 seconds of jumping jacks and 30 seconds of high knees/running on the spot. Immediately after exercise, take your pulse and breathing rate again, and record it below: Pulse/Heart Rate: __________ Beats/Minute Breathing Rate: ___________Breaths/minute 1. What happened to your heart rate & rate of breath before and after exercise? 2. What systems were involved? Name ALL systems that played a part. 3. Reflect on the result you observed in Q1; what happened inside your body to cause this result? What is the purpose? STATION 2: Testing Patellar Reflex One group member should sit on a stool or tall chair with legs dangling and relaxed. Another group member will softly tap just below the knee cap (patella) . There is no need to hit hard – a light tap will do the trick if you’re in the right spot. Repeat for each group member. The patellar reflex is a stretch reflex. What happened when the tendon was tapped? How did it feel? Was there any conscious or voluntary control over the reaction? What body system(s) are involved in a reflex response? How do reflexes work, exactly? Use the diagram below if need be. STATION 3: Filtration On the workbench, you will see a measuring cup, a cup of small gravel, a cup of water, another large cup, and a cheesecloth. Add the cup of gravel and the cup of water together in the measuring cup. Pour the mixture over the cup covered with cheesecloth. Observe and answer Station 3 Questions. IMPORTANT: Please put the gravel and water back in separate cups for the next group. What body system (and specifically, what organ) does this setup represent? What anatomical part and it’s function are represented by the cheesecloth? What is represented by the gravel? If the gravel were added to extra water and removed from the process, what would this represent? What is represented by the water after it’s filtered?
