the action or fact of dying
or being killed; the end of the
life of a person or organism.
BIOLOGICAL
DEATH
the death caused by generation of tissue in brain and other part is called
biological death
Is a formal death of the body when whole system fails but certain organs
continue to function for a while
This type of death occurs only after 4-6 hours of clinical death.
CLINICAL DEATH
is the medical term for cessation of blood circulation and
breathing, the two necessary criteria to sustain human and
many organisms’ lives. It occurs when the heart stop beating
in a regular rhythm, a condition called cardiac arrest.
CARDIOPULMONARY
RESUSCITATION (CPR)
is an emergency procedure that combines
chest compression often with artificial
ventilation in an effort to manually preserve
intact brain function until further measures
are taken to restore spontaneous blood
circulation and breathing in a person who
is in cardiac arrest.
INDICATION OF DEATH:
total lack of response to
external stimuli.
No muscular movement
No reflexes
Flat encephalogram (ECG)
NURSING DUTIES
THE NURSE SHOULD:
Offer their condolences to the family
The nurse would contact the medical examiner to
notify them of the death as well as the physician
and other clinicians who were involved with the
patient.
The nurse can also contact the funeral home
where the family as requested.
In home care the nurse would ask the family if it
was alright to remove any tubes or catheters from
the pt. if they would like to assist in
bathing/preparing the pt. for transport to the
funeral home.
The nurse would assist the family in removing any
jewelry or other items from the pt.
Be sure to maintain the highest dignity and
respect for the deceased pt. during the post
mortem care.
