The two key things that whirlpool management did to achieve productivity gains were
the emphasis they gave on the quality rather than spending more money on fancy machines and
the plan to reward workers to impose motivation which in return increased productivity.
2. Who has benefited from the productivity gains?
The ones who benefited from the productivity gains were the company, its stockholders,
its customers, and even the workers themselves.
3. How are productivity and quality related?
Productivity and quality are related in such sense that if we start emphasizing on
improving quality, it creates a domino-effect towards productivity. As when quality improves,
stability will be established. Therefore, the number of defective outputs will decrease and
inventory cost will also lessen.
4. How can a company afford to pay its workers for productivity gains?
A company may be able to afford paying its workers for productivity gains through the
reassured benefits that they will receive as soon as the quality and productivity of the operation
improves. When productivity increases, their savings will also increase. The workers will also be
given a certain percentage for their share depending on how productive their results appear to
be.
