CHAPTER 1. EDUCATION IN VIETNAM1
1.1. Ho Chi Minh city school holds outdoor test to train students for
honesty
A high school in Ho Chi Minh City has asked students to sit for examinations outside their
classrooms in the last five academic years in a bid to encourage them to be honest testtakers.
Several photos capturing the latest exam at An Duong Vuong High School in Tan Phu
District surfaced on the Internet on Friday and quickly became a debatable topic as to
whether outside tests are appropriate for students.
The test-takers are seen sitting in rows of tables, located about two arm’s lengths away
from each other, in the schoolyard and do their exams, according to the photos.
Schoolmaster Tran Duc Thanh said such an outdoor exam model has been in place since
the academic year 2011-12, as the school wanted to train students for honesty and
ensure fairness among the test-takers.
“There are cases when students got caught cheating during the exams but they just did
not feel embarrassed,” he said.
“Even some teachers consider it normal, so we decided to apply the model.”
W
ith the exams now taking outside classroom, cheating seems impossible and
students will score zero if they do not study hard enough, the schoolmaster said.
Organizing the outdoor exams, in the meantime, is both fun and tiring because they have
to carry the tables to and from the classrooms, according to teachers and students.
The outdoor exams are held at the most suitable time of the day to avoid getting students
affected by harsh weather, an academic staff member said.
Truong Quang Khai, a tenth grader, was at first surprised and scared when he knew he
would sit for the exam on the schoolyard, but is now “getting used to it,” he said.
“I’m also studying more scientifically and seriously because I have to deal with the test on
my own,” he said, adding students can no longer ask each other if they forget something
as they are now seated far apart.

1.2. Ethnic costume turns high school uniform in central Vietnam
A high school in the coastal province of Quang Ngai in central Vietnam has been using a
local ethnic group’s traditional costume as its uniform for over two years with positive
results.
Students attending Tay Tra High School in the rural district of Tay Tra have been wearing
traditional Cor costumes to school every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday since the 201314 academic year.
The Cor are an ethnic group native to Vietnam who live mainly in the provinces of Quang
Ngai and Quang Nam of the central region.
According to the 2009 census, there are approximately 33,817 residing in the country.
The Cor uniform, a blue skirt and white shirt for girls and waistcoat worn over a white
dress shirt for boys, is made from locally woven brocade and seeks to help preserve the
traditional identity of the ethnicity.
Wearing her school’s uniform, student Ho Thi Mien admitted that the new design felt
awkward at first, but “now that we’ve got used to it, I actually feel beautiful and like a real
Cor in it."
The idea was first voiced by principal Pham Cong Hoa of Tay Tra High School in an effort
to combat the invasion of modern clothing from the lowlands into the daily lives of ethnic
Cor.
According to Hoa, in recent years, traditional Cor costumes have lost their appeal to Cor
youths and are only worn by elders.
With that in mind, at the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year, Hoa proposed to local
authorities, the school board, and village elders a new school uniform designed to
represent traditional Cor costumes. The idea received unanimous support from all parties.
“I was thrilled by the positive response,” Hoa said. "Community-oriented education based
on the students’ awareness of their identity is the best method in my opinion."
The new uniform is also welcomed by local residents, who have been overjoyed at the
sight of the traditional costumes in everyday activities.
“Since the introduction of the new uniform, I have observed remarkable changes in the
youths’ awareness of their ethnic identity. This came as a relief for us elders who had

been worried that our traditions would fade into oblivion with the disappearance of our
costumes,” 78-year-old elder Ho Van Keo said.

1.3. Vietnamese high-schooler develops braille conversion machine,
wins national contest
A 17-year-old student in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam was crowned
champion at a national science contest earlier this month for his machine that converts
digital text to Braille.
Vo Trung Thien Tuong, a junior at Ly Tu Trong High School in Thang Binh District, won
first prize at the 2016 National Science Contest for High School Students in the southern
region from March 12 to 15.
His submission was a machine that ‘reads’ digital text from computers and converts them
into Braille that can be read by the blind.
The 2016 National Science Contest for High School Students took place in Dong Nai
Province, welcoming 206 science projects by 358 students in southern Vietnam.
The submissions came from 19 different fields of science, including social and behavioral
sciences, animal bioscience, biochemistry, biomedical engineering and health sciences,
Earth and environmental science, mechanical engineering, material science, robotics,
systems software, and others.
Tuong’s idea for the machine came unexpectedly when he saw visually impaired kids
struggling to type words into a computer at an Internet café when he was in 10 th grade.
The experience inspired him to build a machine that transforms digital data into readable
Braille, making it easier for blind people to access information.
A year of hard work and persistent research using an old computer presented to him by
his mother finally paid off with the completion of the machine.
“What this machine does is convert the language of sighted people to that of the visually
impaired with a simple structure consisting of a microcontroller, two step motors to control
the X and Y axes, two control circuits to control the movements of the axes, and a 12V
source,” Tuong said.

“All the machine operator has to do is press the 'enter,' 'print,' or 'reset' buttons to control
the functions of the machine,” he further explained.
Regarding his contest win, Tuong said, “It truly was a big surprise for me, as my project
was humble compared to the others'. I see this as my launching point to continue creating
other technologies that can contribute to the community.”
Prior to winning the national contest, Tuong had been awarded numerous other provincial
certificates and awards throughout his high school tenure, mainly in the field of computer
science.
“Tuong’s invention has been highly praised by many different organizations. The district’s
Blind Association asked him to put the machine into practice in the locality even before it
was complete,” said Truong Phuc Thinh, vice principal of Ly Tu Trong High School.
