CARBON
CHEMISTRY
aka Organic
Chemistry – the
Chemistry of Life
There are more carbon
compounds than there are
compounds of all other
elements combined.
In other words….
Some Simple Carbon
Compounds….
methane
ethane
ethene
ethyne
acetic acid
ethanol
benzene
salicylic acid
More organic compounds…
caffeine
cellulose
sucrose
And more…
cocaine
adrenaline
ephedrine
A Little more complex…

Definition of Organic Chemistry
Organic chemistry: the study of compounds
of carbon with hydrogen (hydrocarbons),
and their derivatives.
Presently about five million organic
compounds are known.
Alkanes
methane
ethane
propane
butane
pentane
hexane
heptane
octane
nonane
decane
Functional Groups
A functional group is a part of a molecule that is a
recognisable group of bound atoms.
It is common to see molecules made up of a
carbon backbone with functional groups
attached to the chain.
The functional group gives the molecule its
properties, they are centres of chemical reactivity.
The functional groups within a molecule need to
be identified when naming.
Functional Groups
ethane
ethene
ethanol
ethyne
acetic acid
benzene
salicylic acid
