Resource created by Melanie Lloyd for From the Pond Pty Ltd. Excellent teachers have excellent resources! www.fromthepond.com Teaching Tips: Week of Work - Writing Book Using this file You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your non-commercial classroom and home use. The Week We have made this resource to give you a sequenced week of writing activities for your students. It is possible to use the pages separately however, and tailor the work for your own student needs. The following instructions apply to all of our ‘Writing Book’ resources. DAY 1 - Model with Teacher Cards + Read & Paste Page Use the teacher flashcards to model how to make a sentence with the words. Start with the words in random order, read it to the students and ask if it makes sense. Ask the students to help you get the words into the correct order. Model reading strategies and also writing strategies, such as leaving spaces between words and ending with a period/full stop. Students read the sentence in their own book, point to each word and paste the words into the correct places to make the sentence. Discuss the writing strategies of left-to-right formation, capital letter to begin, spaces between words, period/full stop at the end and picture to match text. DAY 2 - Paste & Trace Page Revise the sentence structure from yesterday. Talk about the new word at the end of today’s sentence. Make it with the big cards. Students once again paste the words to match in their own book. Students also trace a copy of the sentence. A small dot has been placed on the starting position of each letter, to guide students with correct letter formation. DAY 3 - Paste & Write Page Students paste the words into place, this time without being able to match the words to a model. They must read the words they cut out and place them in correct order before they paste them down. Students then write a copy of the sentence, using their ‘pasted version’ as a model. www.fromthepond.com © From the Pond Teaching Tips: Week of Work - Writing Book The Week DAY 4 - Finish Page Students can attempt to write a sentence of their own. Some students may repeat one of the same sentences they have been working on for the last three days, others will innovate and write a new sentence. We suggest you get the teachers cards ready for another mini-lesson on writing, and model how to make a new sentence, such as: church. Students can illustrate their work with a small picture in the box provided. DAY 5 - Write Page Students can attempt to write a sentence of their own. Encourage them to use the skills and words they have practiced through the week. Making the Books Print Copy Cut & Staple Choose the pages that are appropriate for your week of learning - or mix up the pages from a few different versions of our ‘Writing Books’. Arrange the pages and staple them ready for your students. You will also need to print, copy and cut the word pages, so that students can complete the cut and paste on days 1, 2 and 3. www.fromthepond.com © From the Pond My Writing Book I go to ©From the Pond My Writing Book I go to ©From the Pond Read I go to school.
