Best performing schools and learners receive awards: Mathematics Learners from primary to secondary schools were recently recognised for their excellent performance in Mathematics. The annual Mathematics Award ceremony is RBI’s School Within a School Project in partnership with the Department of Education (DoE), Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH) and Royal Bafokeng Platinum mine (RBPlat). The programme is aimed at motivating learners to study Maths in significant numbers, and to improve the quality of Maths education in our schools. The award ceremony is the culmination of various Mathematics teaching and learning quality improvement initiatives such as: continuous teacher development and reflection sessions where teachers share good practices and two Mathematics examination sessions where learners from grade 4-8 sit and write common standardised external Maths question papers. While addressing the guests, the principal of Bonwakgogo primary school Mr J.J. Monametsi highlighted the importance of collaboration among the Bafokeng schools in improving the quality of Maths and education in their schools. At the same time, the Provincial Deputy Chairperson of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) Onicca Dikeledi Thibudi also emphasised the benefits of Maths in the children’s future and thanked the teachers for the dedication and diligence they show in the programme. About 290 learners, teachers, School Governing body members, parents and community members attended two separate venues. The first being for Luka schools at Mogono primary school and the second for the Macharora at Bonwakgogo primary school. Participating schools in the Luka area included Luka, Mogono, Ramotse and Thethe where Luka Primary school came out tops and its learner Rebaone Rangaka in Grade 5 became the best performing learner with 90% score. The Macharora area was won by Rasimone primary school and its grade 5 learner, Keabetswe Legoale received the best performing learner Award with a score of 85%. Other participating schools in Macharora included Bonwakgogo, Chaneng, Charora, and Mafenya. RBI congratulated all the hardworking learners, and everyone who contributed to the success of the event and ensuring that Mathematics education remains a priority.
