Begrip Revision: Skimming and scanning a text. ● Skimming: Read through a text and the questions to get a general overview of the text and what questions are asked. ● Scanning: To read through a text for specific facts/information,e.g. names of characters. Read the passage aloud and take note: ● Underline any unfamiliar words. ● Key words and names; ● Unfamiliar, unusual or difficult words; Read Questions: ● This will give you an idea of what to look for when re-reading the text. ● Take note of the question words and instructions. Dictionary Work: ● Look up the unfamiliar words you have underlined and write them down (vocabulary). This will give you a better idea of what the text is about. Read the passage again: ● You should be aware of what questions have been asked. ● Underline key words that you saw in the questions. General Advice: ● Each question usually contains a question word – underline this. ● Scan the page to find the sentence containing the key words. Read the w hole sentence. ● Do not copy directly from the text, unless otherwise instructed. ● Answer in full sentences unless otherwise instructed. Answering Techniques: ● It is important to follow the instructions exactly as they are given: Does the answer need a full sentence, a word or a phrase? ● Avoid starting sentences with conjunctions such as because, and, but and so. ● NB! The mark allocation tells you how many points you must provide. ● Your numbering must correspond to the numbering of the questions. ● If you are asked to describe something in three sentences, and you give four or more, only the first three will be marked. ● When quoting from the text, enclose the quote in “inverted commas”. ● When asked to describe the tone of any text, use one adjective, e.g. angry, happy. ● Edit your work to check that you have answered correctly and that you have not skipped any questions.
