ASSIGNMENT 1
HORIZONTAL CURVE
SIMPLE CURVE
Prob. # 1
The tangents of a simple curve have bearing of N 20° E and N 80° E
respectively. The radius of the curve is 200 meters. Find all the
elements of a simple curve.
Prob. # 2
A simple curve has a radius of 280 meters and its distance from the
point of curvature to the point of tangency along the curve is 240
meters.
a) Compute the central angle of the curve using arc basis.
b) Compute the distance from the midpoint of the long chord to the
midpoint of the curve.
c) Compute the area bounded by the tangent and the portion outside
the central curve.
Prob. # 3
A simple curve has a radius of 100 meters and an angle of intersection
of the tangents equal to 35°. It is required to change the curve such
that the point of tangency should be moved out a distance of 10
meters without changing the direction of the tangents and the
stationing of the point of curvature. Find the length of the new
tangent.
Prob. # 4
The offset distance of the simple curve from the point of tangency to
the tangent line passing through the point of curvature is equal to 120
meters. The stationing of point of curvature is 2+500. The simple
curve has an angle of intersection of 50°.
a) Compute the degree of curvature.
b) Compute the external distance.
c) Compute the length of long chord.
