SETTING the mood in Tom Sawyer
It was an old fashioned graveyard, up on a hill about a mile and a half from
the village. It had a crazy board fence around it, which leaned inwards in
places, and outward the rest of the time, not one board still stood straight
up. Maybe they never did to begin with... Grass and weeds grew
unwatched throughout the whole cemetery, in some areas they were
nearly taller than the boys, clearly they hadn’t been cut in some time. The
ground that covered the crumbling graves was sinking in, dragging the
weather beaten gravestones beneath the surface. “Sacred to the memory
of” was once painted on them, but it could no longer be read on most of
them now, even if there had been light. Time had even washed their
owners’ names from them, leaving only pale stone.
SETTING the mood in Tom Sawyer
SETTING the mood in Tom Sawyer
A faint wind moaned through the trees, and Tom feared it might be the
spirits of the dead, complaining about being disturbed. The boys barely
talked, and only in whispers, for the atmosphere of the graveyard and its
frightening silence crushed their usually vibrant spirits. Even if they wanted
to talk, the words wouldn’t overcome the terror that flowed through their
bodies. They finally found the mound of earth they had been searching for,
and sheltered themselves within the protection of three great elm trees
that grew in a tight bunch just a few feet away from the grave.
Then they waited in silence for what seemed like a long time. The hooting
of a distant owl was the only sound that troubled the dead stillness. Tom’s
reflections grew very dark as he let his mind race. He had to force some
small talk...
