Pieces of History Hope lives in us all, and in our darkest moments of life we cling to it desperately. Our American Flag represents the dream that our country’s founders strived to create for the generations to come. The dream that all Americans share – that we will be given the opportunities to achieve our goals and create the lives that we want to live. Even when you reach the age when you understand what dream you would like to pursue, trusting in the journey rather than the end result is easier said than done. For the pieces of history we know and have been a part of have shown us that doors of opportunity open and close without warning. Our Flag is that resilient symbol of American history that reminds us of our role as the future of our country. It unifies us into an indivisible nation, no matter the differing beliefs and backgrounds that make us unique. For American youth today, like you and me, it feels like we’ve been living through a historical event for the entirety of our lives. At any age, it can be difficult to find yourself in patriotism. With reflection and a deeper understanding of what it resembles, I have begun to look at the flag differently. It has shown me more about who I am. Instead of continuing to feel disconnected from it, like so many young people do, I found a piece of my identity. I realized that pursuing your own dream is a lot like pursuing the knowledge of every little thing that the Flag has been through - it’s hard. We easily label ourselves in order to find a community that will give a sense of belonging. No matter your race, gender, sexuality, religion, or ability – each person chooses to adopt a political stance that most closely represents their beliefs and identity. The social pressure of choosing “red or blue” or “left or right” is a demand that even our youngest members of Pledge have to decide while they are already facing the challenges of growing up and figuring out who they are. Despite the many challenges we are bound to face as the future of our country, it is in all of your hands to take on these challenges with pride. Find the bravery within to make the best of each situation we will be dealt. Since all of our lives have changed so much after being struck by a national pandemic, I have witnessed such hopeful innovation and positivity within our organization. These are the real decisions we make that matter. To love each other while we are staying safe at home, or to serve on the frontlines even if that means you are putting yourself at risk. Divert your focus from things that are out of your control, and instead do what you can to make positive change. Love your country by associating the flag with who you are. It symbolizes much more than what you often see and hear, and it embodies not only freedom and liberty, but the values that Rainbow instills in its members. As you reflect on the many pieces of history that affect our present and future – remember the influence that you will have with each decision you make. Thank you.
