Buenos Aires has been called the "Paris of South America," because of the European influences. The people are well-educated and 97% of the population can read and write. Lesson Jamestown Settlement Jamestown Settlement ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● In 1607, 144 English men and boys established the Jamestown colony. The colonists were told that if they did not make anything, financial support would end. Colonists was searching for golds and spent little time farming. After the first year, malaria and harsh winter killed 106 colonists. John Smith required colonists to spend four hours per day farming. He had the motto “Work or starve”. An accident forced Smith to return to England in 1609. After his departure, the colony faced more challenge A boat of colonists and supplies sank. That winter has been the worst starving of all. Jamestown Settlement ● ● ● ● Despite the cultivation of tobacco, the colony was financial failure. The king declared the Virginia Company bankrupt in 1624. About 200,000 pounds were lost among the investors. The charter was revoked, and Virginia became a royal colony. The Growth of Tobacco Trade ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Virginia could rely on goal for its economic future. They tried glassblowing, vineyard cultivation and silkworm farming. Only one successful crop: Tobacco. Tobacco was introduced by the Native Americans. Despite initial criticisms, tobacco became popular in middle class England. John Rolfe thought Virginia would be a good site for growing tobacco. People thought that the type of tobacco from the Carribean is better. Rolfe reacted to customer demand by importing seeds from West Indies. Tobacco began to shape the colony’s society. The Growth of Tobacco Trade ● ● ● ● ● Tobacco is very labor-intensive and drained lots of nutrient from the soil. A people being brought to the new world becomes an indentured servant. As they work for 4 - 5 years, they become free person. The Crown grant land if a people gets brought to the New World. The colony began to expand but is challenged by the Native American tribe, Powhatan. War with Powhatan’s People ● ● ● ● ● Powhatan wanted peace with the English settlers because they seemed harmless and had weapons which the tribe can use to defeat other tribe. After the “starving time”, colonists attacked the tribe’s food supplies, Powhatan ordered an attack. The war was brutal from both side. The war ended in 1614. Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan was married to Powhatan and taken to England. However, she died of disease 3 years later. Pocahontas saves John Smith War with Powhatan’s People ● ● ● ● ● ● Powhatan’s brother, Opechancanough wanted to continue the fight. In 1622, they attacked the Englishmen. The war continued until 1645 before it was Opechancanough was captured and executed. Difference in culture separated the Native American and the colonists. For example, the Native American believed that the land is owned by no one, therefore, you can’t sell the land. It would be like selling air. The view of land ownership by the Englishmen was completely foreign and they couldn’t understand why they are being pushed off the tribal land. Virginia’s House of Burgesses ● ● ● The house was founded in 1619 to make laws for the entire colony. Only wealthy white men could be a burgess. They meet once every year.
