With hundreds of food poisoning cases being reported each year, Chipotle could not hide
from the limelight when it reported six outbreaks coming from three different germs. Take for
instance in Boston and California where 387 people suffered from the Norovirus pathogen
(Fong, 2016). The disease did not come from the restaurant food however it was a result of a sick
employee who reported to work while feeling sick. Another outbreak was reported in other
Chipotle locations within Minnesota but this time the Salmonella bacteria that came due to
contaminated tomatoes. As if that was not enough the restaurant experienced an E. coli outbreak
in nine different states thus making the work of finding the root cause of the disease much
difficult.
By this time Chipotle closed all of its 43 branches and launched an investigation into the
64 ingredients that the restaurant uses (Fong, 2016). The results showed that all ingredients were
safe while the Center for Disease control stated that it was difficult to come up with a conclusive
result of the ingredients used since all meals at Chipotle comprised of many ingredients put into
one. Examples include the burrito, tacos, and guacamole. The E. coli outbreak came to an end
on February 2016 but by this time more customers were more wary of Chipotles bad reputation
which it could have avoided had its employees being properly trained on improved health and
sanitation standards.
Environment tests should be carried out to understand how its ingredients are being
handled. Cows for instance are the number one cause of E. coli thus tests should be carried out
on a cow before any slaughtering commences. Batch texting on the DNA of various ingredients
should be carried out to help the company improve its confidence and that of its customer after
going through a traumatizing ordeal. With the company’s stocks dropping Chipotle must go on a

charm offensive where through TV and social media advertisements the company can show the
steps it has taken towards the achievement of high-quality food standards.
