Question 1:
Verizon communication Inc. is a telecommunication network that brings in constant changes in technology
and innovation at a rapid speed. The five elements of structure are work specialization, centralization,
departmentalization span of control and formalization. Work specialization tells whether the work is divided into
functional or social specialization. Functional specialization means a work is divided into smaller units, so the
work can be simplified. Social specialization refers to a specialization of an individual in a specific professional
skill. The second element of structure is centralization. When the decision-making power is on top of the
organizational hierarchy is known as centralization and when it is on the lower level employees then it refers to
decentralization. The next element is departmentalization. Individual groups are called departments and it is sorted
based on the tasks that the workers in each department perform or based on product, brand line, geographical
location or even consumer’s need. The fourth element is span of control which mean how many employees can one
supervisor handle in an organization. The final element is formalization which means highly standardized work
that are govern by rules, regulation and procedures. Verizon Communication Inc. is operational based divisional
organizational structure. The current goal for this company is to expand in Canada where it uses media and
telematics from Yahoo to enhance its advertising and business. In addition, the network and technology division
start to develop new network and technology using fiber optics and customer and product operation division starts
to establish a new business in Canada. The company works as in hierarchy where top-level employees have
different task to perform than lower level employees. Lower level employees play a major role in this business
where it involves creativity and innovation of new technology causing a quick change in the company. Functional
jobs are performed by a set of different departments and geographical division provides faster networks to the
customers throughout United States. Smaller division working together shows that it has a best span of control and
providing network to Canada requires fulfilling new rules, regulation and procedure in the new country of their
business.

Question 2:
Verizon is better suited for the organic structure that tend to have jobs that are enriched with varieties of
tasks and responsibilities. It performs a team-based approach and lower level employee’s decision-making skills
are valued more than higher level employees. Organic structure has the ability to change, process, analyze
distribute information and knowledge at a faster rate. To stay competitive in business, efficient communication
between departments and introducing new innovations that stand out than other companies are required. In this
structure everyone plays a key role in decision making process where decentralizing decision-making employees
can make important decisions too. This helps to increase creativity when developing new products and finding new
solutions to problems. In addition, organic structure has large network authority, employment is based on goal
oriented than job oriented and employee empowerment is encouraged by the company.
