Principles of Engineering II Lesson 3: Solving Transport Problems Icebreaker: Lie or no Lie Introduce yourself and tell one truth and one lie. The group will guess which is true. Course Objectives • Identify transport engineering problems • Identify transport engineering solutions • List the types of engineers who would resolve the problems The Engineering Design Process • What are the problems? • Brainstorm • Draw a diagram • Test it • Make changes Solving the Problem Build a Bicycle The Scenario There are numerous ways to travel throughout London, one of which is riding a bicycle. Since so many people travel via bicycle, the city of London is looking to develop a new bike that can be used efficiently and safely, while also being inexpensive and easy to store. As an engineer, you are hired to design and build a bicycle that is cost-effective and is able to maintain the safety of all. Identify the possible problems you will encounter as you design different aspects of the bicycle. Create solutions to these problems and work towards the overall design of the bicycle. Also identify the different engineers that will be useful in solving these problems. Solving the Problem Weight distribution Solving the Problem Gear control Solving the Problem Brakes Solving the Problem Lighting Finding a Solution Build a Bicycle Finding a Solution Design Finding a Solution Materials Finding a Solution Additions Types of Engineers Mechanical Materials Environmental Electrical • Engineers must design the bicycle, gears, wheels, and the way it drives • Engineers must evaluate and choose the best materials for the main shaft and wheels • The environmental impact of the materials and manufacturing of the bicycle are identified • Any lighting or digital components of the bicycle can be designed to make the bike safer Lesson Overview Solving Transport Problems Overview Engineering Design Process Ask, imagine, plan, create, improve What is the problem?
