Baarøy, Fillip-André “How Music Listening Affects the Climate.” Phys.org, Phys.org, 26 Apr.
2019, phys.org/news/2019-04-music-effects-climate.html.
In his article, Baarøy explains how consumers contribute to the pollution of the earth from
buying records on CD to streaming. He states that though production numbers for CDs have
dropped the threat is still prominent with the amount of data and energy being utilized to fulfill
today’s digital structure.
This is an academic source that details issues with research dating back from the 1970s to now.
The statistic-based evidence found in this source proves the usefulness of this article.
I selected this article to be a source because it gives a solid basis for the topic/issue I selected.
Challe, Tiffany. “Ecomusicology: Back to the Roots of Sound/Music and Environmental
Sustainability.” CUNY Academic Works, academicworks.cuny.edu/gc_etds/883/.
In my second source, Challe basically states that the damage humans are doing are not only
unintentionally done they are also a result of the progress we have seen over the years in terms of
technology and the vast improvements they have underwent. She goes more in depth with how
mostly the western world generate a larger carbon footprint especially in the music industry
which in turn depletes the worlds resources resulting in Global Warming.
This scholarly article gives me a deeper understanding due to the immense amount of researched
evidence within it. It does not only focus on the consumers of music, but it touches on many
other parts as well, even different art forms.
It helps me see the issue from a multitude of various angles. The article also helps me to form a
different perspective on the problem giving me more ground to walk on when it comes to the
music industry and global warming.

concerts and other reasons artists travel which in turn contribute to global warming. This is yet
another source urging society to come together and decrease the level of pollution we are
causing.
I selected this academic article because it shows yet another way/reason the music industry needs
to be reworked because of the large roll it plays in damaging the environment.
It goes along with my other sources which gives me the same outlook I already have on the
topic.
GlobalChange.gov, www.globalchange.gov/browse/reports/sap-45-effects-climate-change-energyproduction-and-use-united-states.
In this source in which the authors break down climate change and how energy consumption
contributes.
I selected this primary source which not only focuses on the music industry but on other forms of
energy consumption which clearly is a danger to our environment.
Though the authors in this source does not necessarily speak directly to the music industry some
things they mentioned take place in the industry making the source quite relevant to the topic.
“Greener Rooms: How Is the Music Industry Responding to the Environmental Impact of
Touring?” Crack Magazine, crackmagazine.net/article/long-reads/greener-rooms-how-is-themusic-industry-responding-to-the-environmental-impact-of-touring/.
This is an article where the author took the initiative to research and find how some artists and
2
officials in the music industry are acting and trying to better the environment.
This is a secondary source.

greener.
Hiltunen, Riikka, et al. “Music Industry and Climate Change - It's Time to Act!” FMQ, 22 Apr.
2020, fmq.fi/articles/music-industry-and-climate-change.
In this article, Hiltunen includes videos evidence of conscious events for conscious audiences
who are trying to do what they can to make the music industry greener.
This secondary source is another stack in the mile adding to my evidence pile which in turn will
help me with the structure of my essay.
This source gives me a view of how people in other parts of the planet are trying to better
themselves and the planet.
Hobson, Jeremy, and Allison Hagan. “How One Band Is Helping Climate Researchers Tackle the
Music Industry's Carbon Emissions.” How One Band Is Helping Climate Researchers Tackle
The Music Industry's Carbon Emissions | Here & Now, WBUR, 30 Dec. 2019,
www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2019/12/30/music-industry-climate-change.
In this source, Hobson and Hagan focus in on one group of artists are doing something few are
doing. They are acting by pausing their events and limiting their traveling due to environmental
concerns.
This is a secondary source
I selected this source to show that not all artist are bad when it comes to this issue.

and artists are trying to fix the problem and What other things could be done? This article is of a
study done by college officials which show how relentless work and research can lead you to
finding help and hope in some human beings.

Concerned Scientists, www.ucsusa.org/resources/global-warming-happening-and-humans-areprimary-cause.
This article links the energy usage of humans to the rising temperatures of earth. It serves as a
proving factor to my claims. It shows that human activity plays a major role in climate change.
This is an academic article.
This source is helpful to my paper by showing how decorated scientist prove that humans are the
main cause of global warming yet many refuse to act.
