Comparison Chart Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer below to compare and contrast the arguments of Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Criteria: Federalists Anti-Federalists Supporters James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay George Mason, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams Views on the Articles of Confederation They believed the Articles of Confederation was too weak to effectively deal with the nation’s issues. They supported a weak central government and states’ rights. They preferred the Articles of Confederation. Views on a Strong National Government They believed a strong federal government is more effective than a confederacy of local governments at controlling factions. They believed no federal government could pass laws that would be suitable for all states. They also believed that the proposed federal government took too much power away from the states. Arguments For and Against Ratification of the Constitution They were concerned that adding a bill of rights would, in effect, limit the rights of citizens. They supported ratification. The Constitution needed to protect the natural rights of citizens (freedom of speech and religion, right to a trial by jury). They opposed ratification.
