Personal Philosophy as an English Teacher 1. That it is an important enabler, allowing students to understand all subjects, communicate and express themselves effectively. That all children should gain the skills needed to be able to access the richness of literature, drama and poetry. 2. I should take others’ beliefs into account; for example, the needs of the School I am teaching in and requirements of the system. 3. To make a difference to the lives of the students; improve their ability and understanding in English. 4. This will derive from all sorts of influences from my own education and beliefs, combined with the structure and policies of the school and department I am in. This course will help me to develop my professional teaching approach. 5. Many futures, hopefully enhanced by good ability and understanding in English. 6. If I can enhance their English skills, it will help them in a practical sense; to gain and sustain better employment and to understand and appreciate the literature within and outside the curriculum. 1.What are my fundamental beliefs about English as a school subject? 2.Should I prioritise only these beliefs when I plan and deliver lessons or incorporate others’ beliefs, too? 3.Why am I teaching what I am teaching? 4.Why am I teaching the way I am teaching? 5.What futures do I imagine for my students? 6.How can my English teaching contribute to their development towards these futures?
