Class Participation Rubric The following rubric is aligned to Common Core ELA Speaking and Listening standards. 3 Comes to class and discussions prepared, having read or researched material under study as evidenced by high quality written work and ample verbal participation 2 Comes to class and discussions mostly prepared, having read or researched a majority of the material under study as evidenced by quality written work and sufficient verbal participation. Use of Evidence Explicitly and accurately refers to evidence on the topic, text, or issue by quoting directly from the sources when possible to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. Behavior Completely follows rules for collegial discussions, showing leadership through politeness and respect for others’ ideas; engaged and interested in class and listens attentively to peers. Poses questions that elicit elaboration and responds to others' questions and comments with relevant observations and ideas that bring the discussion back on topic as needed. Uses appropriate eye contact when listening and speaking; when speaking, exhibits appropriate volume and clear pronunciation. Explicitly refers to evidence on the topic, text, or issues by paraphrasing from sources to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. May show some confusion regarding subject. Follows rules for collegial discussions, exhibiting polite and respectful behavior; listens attentively to peers. Preparation Questioning Confidence Grade: ________ 1 Comes to class and discussions with minimal preparation, having read or researched some of the material under study as evidenced by incomplete written work and minimal verbal participation. Uses personal experiences or generalizations rather than sources to probe and reflect on ideas under discussion. 0 Comes to discussions without any preparation as evidenced by a failure to complete written work and a refusal to participate in class. Inconsistent adherence to the rules for collegial discussion exhibited by behavior that may disrupt the class or discussion, or behavior that shows disinterest. Shows a complete disregard for rules of collegial discussions, exhibiting behavior that is rude, disrespectful, or ill-mannered. Asks questions about the material under study and responds to others’ questions. Shows a limited ability to ask or respond to questions about the material under study. Student asks questions that are unrelated to the material under study and is unable to respond to others’ questions. Makes eye contact when listening and speaking; when speaking exhibits mostly acceptable volume and pronunciation. Struggles to make eye contact when listening and speaking; speaks quietly and/or mumbles at times. Inability to make eye contact when listening and speaking; volume and pronunciation make it impossible for others to comprehend speech or refusal to participate verbally. References to the topic, text, or issue are irrelevant, inappropriate or incomprehensible. May not participate at all.
