Summary:
The story is about Dr. Vivian Bearing, an old professor of seventeenth-century poetry who has been diagnosed
with stage-four metastatic ovarian cancer. The opening scene starts with Dr. Harvey Kelekian, a gynecologist,
diagnoses Dr. Vivian, saying that she has 4th stage cancer. Dr. Kelekian further explained that the symptoms of
the disease were undetected when it was in the 2nd and 3rd stage and that they were developing an aggressive
experimental drug treatment for ovarian cancer. Not having had time to fully understand and assess herself, Dr.
Vivian agrees to participate. As she was confined in the hospital, she went through numerous tests and
chemotherapies that made her bald and feel weak. As times passes by she used the sonnets of John Donne to
reflect what she has been experiencing and reminisce her memories with her past professor, soon after that she
was introduced to Dr. Jason Posner, an oncology researcher together with Dr. Kelekian. Jason was a former
student of Dr. Bearing's in Literature and he conducted a pelvic test on her that made Dr. Vivian extremely
embarrassed. In there she also meets Susie, the head nurse in the treatment facility. Soon, Dr. Vivian realized
and sees how Dr. Jason and Dr. Kelekian are using her solely as research as they kept on giving Dr. Vivian a full
dosage of the drugs and tons of tests that made her extremely tired and weak. On the other hand, Nurse Susie
consolidates and talks to her most of the time. She then asked Dr. Vivian if she wants to be revived once her
heart stops and explains that if they revive her they, meaning both of her doctors, will be able to continue to
study her for their research or, she can choose to be DNR (let her just die), Dr. Vivian chose to be DNR. Dr.
Vivian's pain increased every single day because of the fluid injected to her. Her former professor visited her and
read a story about the "Runaway bunny". Vivian died immediately after, Dr. Jason tried to revive her but Nurse
Susie insisted.
Nurse Susie is a nurse who cares for Vivian in any real sense. Susie provides Dr. Vivian with exceptional care
consistent with her obligations as a nurse. Throughout the entire treatment of Vivian, she assists her in
everything that Dr. Vivian will do, giving her medications when she's in pain, cold, or if needed. She lifts the
mood of Dr. Vivian by consolidating and listening to her. Also, she took the responsibility to tell the patient what
administered treatment will be done to her even if she's unconscious. The major concept that central in the
nursing practice in the movie are the person, environment, health, and nursing. Nurse Susie treated Dr. Vivian as
a person, and not as an experiment or instrument for research, unlike the two doctors. Susie as well always
ensured that the environment of Dr. Vivian is clean and keeps away from external factors that might contribute
to Dr. Vivian's sickness. Susie made prioritized Dr. Vivian's health by always checking on her and always
responding to her when she needs help. Susie describes what nursing really is, and it's all about the client and
nurse interaction and to accomplish her obligations a nurse by providing care. These nursing paradigms or
concepts are interrelated with each other, as these four concepts are used frequently and defined differently
throughout different nursing theories. Without the presence of one, nursing responsibilities wouldn't be
established or done.
