What is Kickstart ?
Kickstart is an installation method , is used primarily ( but not
exclussively ) by the Redhat Enterprise Linux operating system to
automatically perform unattended operating System installations and
configuration .
Why we use Kickstart :-
 A system administrator can create a single file containing the answers to
all the questions typically asked during an installation
 Save time installing
 Same configuration many computers
 Quick installation system
 Un attendant installation system
Advantage of kickstart installation :-




The OS is installed automatically.
Quick installation system.
Save time installing.
Many client machines can be installed at the same time.
Disadvantage of kickstart installation :-
 Services, such as TFTP, DHCPD, and PXE, need to be
configured.
 Kickstart installations can be carried out with the use of a cd - rom
, a local hard drive .
Kickstart installer :-
 Kickstart installers can only be performed using a local CD - ROM
 A local hard drive
 NFS installation methods. FTP and HTTP installations cannot be
automated using kickstart mode.
 Starting with Red Hat 7.0 and higher, FTP and HTTP are now
supported.
Boot the installer :-
 Installation Discs
 PXE
 Boot.ISO
Kickstart file configure:-
 Install http rpm package
 Mount this logical drive in "/var/www/html" folder




Create a folder "rhel-6" inside /var/www/html
Mount the dvd rom.
Copy full dvd into /var/www/htm1/rhel-6 folder
Share this folder using "nfs".
Kickstart installation process :








Boot using dvd
Boot:- linux askmethod
Select:- english
Installation media:- nfs
Enable ipv4
Manual configuration
Ip v4:- ipaddres
Nfs server name:- ip address of nfs server
Rhel directory:-/var/www/html/rhel-6
Benefits:-
The Kickstart method of Linux installation can greatly reduce the
length of time it takes to install the operating system. Time is saved
not only because a network connection can be faster than using
CDs, but also because it can be left unattended to install a
predetermined Linux configuration.
