Hatziry Bautista Sánchez LID2 17122002 MakeUp now and then Throughout history makeup has been evolving to become the huge industry that it is today. It has its origins back to the prehistoric times when ancestors used natural pigments to paint their bodies. People relate makeup history to the Egyptians as they are recognised as a culture that invented makeup to look good. Funny story, it also was used as bug repellent. Then there comes the Chinese, the Grecians, Romans, British, etc. Some of them used it as part of its beauty routine, others to make a difference between royalty and lower classes, it was used in theatres, after that in movies to create special effects. There’s a lot of wonders that you can do with makeup. It sounds easy but it’s not. It requires certain abilities to be a good MUA depending in the makeup area you’re in. There are MUA’s in Beauty and some of them have already started his own makeup brand like Bobbi Brown. Fashion MUA’s and you can see their work in runways, magazines, etc. Then we have Body and Face Painting where they can transform you from head to toes literally. Theatre and TV MUA’s, Film and Movies that goes from a pretty casual makeup to an amazing makeup to create special effects. Last but not least, there’s the most common ones, those that maybe our moms or sisters or aunts have hired once, Personal Services MUA’s, who do our makeup to attend a wedding, prom or any social event. But what if you’re a beginner in this subject? What should we know when we’re starting with makeup? First of all you have to know your skin type. There are generally 4 skin types which are: Oily skin: Enlarged pores, shiny, thick complexion, blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes Dry skin: Almost invisible pores, rough complexion, red patches, your skin is less elastic and it has more visible lines. Your skin can crack, peel, or become itchy, irritated, or inflamed. If it’s very dry, it can become rough and scaly, especially on the backs of your hands, arms, and legs. Combination skin: Your skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin). Many people have this type. It may need slightly different care in different areas. Pores that look larger than normal, because they’re more open, blackheads and Shiny skin. Normal skin: Not too dry and not too oily, normal skin has no or few imperfections, no severe sensitivity, barely visible pores and a radiant complexion. Knowing this you can now choose your foundation, concealer, primers, etc. There’s some products that you may not need and some others that will be your essentials but that’s up to every single one. According to Macy’s, there’s a list of best selling brands in the USA that are mostly known in the rest of the world such as: NYX Cosmetics, Too Faced, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Bobbi Brown, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Urban Decay, Smashbox, Sephora, Dior, etc. But each country has its own brands and some of them are as good as the previously mentioned but not as popular. When it comes to brands there are a lot of where you can choose. One thing you may want to consider is that some of these brands may not be cruelty free, if you’re an animal lover then you may be against some of the brands that still do animal testing. From a few years back to now a days makeup has gain tons of popularity thanks to the new trends and YouTube. That platform has become a huge way to show your talent and there are tons of beauty gurus that have become very popular and famous in this industry. Some of them even have their own companies now like Jeffree Star, Jackie Hernandez or had done some collaboration with recognised brands like Nikkie Tutorials, Jaclyn Hill, Desi Perkins, MannyMUA, James Charles, etc. So now makeup can be reached by everyone and it’s way easier to learn.
