1 Enzyme Topic Review Questions The following questions relate to the AS Unit on Enzymes. The ability to answer these questions clearly and fully will help to build your knowledge and confidence regarding the details needed for strong examination performance. 1. What kind of proteins are enzymes? Explain the different levels of structure in enzymes. 2. Enzymes are sometimes described and intracellular and extracellular – what does this mean. Explain these terms with examples. 3. Explain enzyme action with the use of diagrams. Start by showing enzyme structure, including the presence of the active site and end with the products of the reaction. 2 4. Explain the ‘induced fit’ hypothesis? (A labelled drawing might be useful here) 5. Name some of the key factors that affect enzyme activity and explain how they affect the formation of enzyme-substrate omplexes.. 6. Define the term ‘denaturation’, in terms of changes to the tertiary structure of protein structure. 3 7. Define the term ‘inhibitor’, in relation to enzymes and explain the difference between competitive and non-competitive inhibitors. (a labelled / annotated diagram might help here) 8. Explain how some inhibitors can be poisons and give at least one relevant example. 4 9. Explain how inhibitors can be used for medical purposes and give at least one example. 10. Describe the difference between co-factors and co-enzymes.
