Multi- Component Systems
for Flue Gas Monitoring
Stack Gas Monitoring Ta i l o r e d t o y o u r N e e d s
Whether in waste incineration
plants or in power plants, at
the flue gas side or with emission control:
Reliable and economical measurement systems are the basis for operating your plant efficiently.
SICK measurement systems
meet these requirements to a
very high degree. E.g. the
MCS 100 E HW, MCS 100 E PD
and MCS 100 E CD
measurement systems.
These systems have one basic structure in common, yet by individual adaptation to the
specific conditions - they present solutions for various applications with stack gas monitoring – at waste incineration
plants and power plants, at
the raw gas side as well as at
the clean gas side.
SICK, however, does not only
supply the measurement systems, but provides engineering solutions for complete
stack gas analysis systems
and even personnel-accessible containers with all the
equipment pre-installed.

Measurement Technology
Proven Extractive
Measurement Technique
The MCS 100 E HW, PD and
CD measurement systems
operate extractively, i.e. a
partial stream from the
sample gas is conducted to
an analyzer. The sampling
system is adapted to the individual conditions at the sampling point.
Intelligent Analyzer
MCS 100 E is an IR analyzer
for stack gas. It comprises
photometer, cell and computer control unit. An integrated flow meter controls the
sample gas flow rate. As an
option the analyzer can be
equipped with a ZrO2 oxygen
probe. All components in
contact with the sample gas
can be heated to high temperatures.
MCS 100 E performs and
controls the stack gas measurement. The measured
values and system conditions
are stored and transmitted
via fiber optical cables to
external optical/electrical
transfer units (I/O module

boxes). From this point, also
digital and analog signals can
be received.
Reliable, Flexible
Systems
The MCS 100 E HW-, PD- and
CD-systems consist of a
system cabinet accommodating the MCS 100 E analyzer
and – depending on the type
of system – the I/O module
boxes, sample gas cooler,
permeation dryer, sample gas
pump and power relays.
The systems are designed for
independent operation. They
have an automatic zerosetting and (partly optional)
calibration function as well as
self-check functions and generate the corresponding
status signals. In case of a
malfunction they switch automatically to the stand-by
mode and backflush the sampling system and cell to
remove the corrosive stack
gas.
As an option, measured
values and status signals can
be received and tapped at
additional I/O module boxes.
Depending on the requirements the latter can be
equipped with digital and
analog input and output interfaces, temperature controllers
for external components (e.g.
heated tubes) as well as a
unit for barometrical correction.
In addition to this, data acquisition systems, printers or
modems can be connected to
the MCS 100 E systems; and
operation with modbus protocol is also possible.
Simple Operation,
Easy Maintenance
To indicate the mode of operation to the user, there are
3 control lamps (operation,
error, maintenance) on the
front panel, where there are
also a maintenance switch
and the main power switch.
The maintenance interval of
the systems is merely
3 months.

Hot Measurement Technique
MCS 100 E HW applying the
hot measurement technique
is the standard solution for
stack gas monitoring at
waste incineration plants
according to local regulations
as well as it is a highly
reliable and safe solution for
applications at waste
incineration plants and power
plants with a high acid dew
point. MCS 100 E HW is used
at the raw gas side for
process monitoring, but also
at the clean gas side for
emission monitoring.
Hot Measurement
Technique for
Determination of the
whole Range of
Components
With MCS 100 E HW all components – from the sampling
system to the cell – that are
in contact with the sample
gas are electrically heated to
maintain their temperature
above the acid dew point and
to protect them against corrosion.
The sampling unit takes a
representative sample of the
emissions – freed of dust,
but unchanged chemically –
for analysis. Consequently,
components such as HCl,
SO2, CO, NO, NH3, H2O and
CO2 can be measured. Other
IR sensitive components can
be determined without any
problem.
The heated sample gas
pump is inside the
MCS 100 E HW system
cabinet. It conducts the stack
gas via the heated sampling
system and the heated
sample gas tube to the
system cabinet and subsequently through the analyzer.
To minimize the adsorption
and desorption effects of HCl
and NH3, the whole system is
designed for a high flow rate
of approx. 600 L/h.
The sample gas outlet line is
usually unheated.

With the MCS 100 E PD the
stack gas is dried by means
of a permeation dryer. This
system is thus especially
designed for determinations
within small measuring
ranges at power plants and
waste incineration plants; e.g.
with extremely low limit values
or for monitoring guaranteed
values with stack gas purification.
Small Measuring
Ranges by dry Stack
Gas
Again, with the MCS 100 E PD
a sample gas pump conducts
the stack gas via a heated
sampling system and a
heated sample tube to the
measuring system where –
downstream of the sample
gas pump – a permeation
dryer removes the sample
moisture.
By this procedure it becomes
possible to measure SO2 and
HCl in extremely low concentrations and it allows to
analyze further components,
such as NO2, also at low measuring ranges. The measurement of H2O and NH3 is not
possible. Relatively clean
stack gas conditions are
required for the use of
MCS 100 E PD.
To minimize the adsorption
and desorption effects, the
whole system is designed for
a high flow rate of approx.
400 L/h.

Attractively-priced Solution for
Applications at Power Plants:
T h e M C S 10 0 E C D w i t h G a s C o o l e r
MCS 100 E CD with sample
gas cooler is the appropriate
solution for measurement of
industrial processes at power
plants – especially the power
plants that require extremely
small measuring ranges.
Small Measuring
Ranges after a Gas
Cooler
With MCS 100 E CD an
unheated sample gas pump
conducts the stack gas via a
heated sampling system and
a gas cooler to the measure-
ment system. The stack gas
is dried in the gas cooler and
the condensate is removed.
In comparison with the hot
measurement technique, it is
possible with this system to
achieve smaller measuring
ranges and to analyze
additional components, such
as NO2. The measurement is
only possible for none water
soluble components.
To minimize delay times, the
whole system is designed for
a flow rate of approx.
400 L/h.

and System Engineering
Measurement at Multiple Sample Points
The measurement systems
can be adapted to measure
at multiple sample points
without extensive additional
effort. Sample point switching
is made with pneumatic
valves in the gas sampling
filters and is controlled by the
MCS 100 E.
Additional Analyzers
As an option further analyzers
can be integrated into the
system cabinet, e.g. an FID
into the MCS 100 E HW. Also,
a paramagnetic oxygen analyzer can be integrated into
the system instead of the
ZrO2 oxygen sensor.
Special Designs
For non-stationary applications, transportable systems
in modular units are available.
The systems are normally
incorporated in steel cabinets.
For outdoor installations, each
system can be delivered in a
glass fiber reinforced plastic
housing, with its own air conditioning on request.
If long-distance heated sampling lines are to be avoided,
it is e.g. possible to supply the
MCS 100 E PD in a special
version where sample probe,
sample gas pump and permeation dryer are integrated into
one compact sampling unit
installed directly at the sampling point. In this case the
sample gas is conducted to
the system cabinet via an
unheated tube.

System Engineering
SICK does not only supply the
systems, but even provides
engineering solutions for complete stack gas analysis installations – from the measurement of industrial
processes to complex emission monitoring systems in
accordance with the stipulations of the respective local
authorities.
SICK offers turnkey solutions
for personnel-accessible containers with all the equipment
pre-installed.
