Objectives of this Course
• Through these materials, the the ideals for ecosystem formation
using open licenses and standardization will be studied through
approaches by Google and Apple toward the smart home business.
• Concretely, the aim is for the student to understand the following by
reading these materials.
 Relationship between a business strategy or business mode
and ecosystem formation based on open licenses and
standardization
 Points for when progressing with formation of a business

Sales Composition
Sales composition in 2015 was made up of approx. 70% in advertising revenue by
sites directly operated by Google. When including advertising revenue via partners
through the AdSense program advertising revenue accounts for approx. 90%.

Trends Associated with the Smart Home Business
In 2014, Google acquired the thermostat venture NestLabs for $3.2 billion
[Characteristics of Nest]
In addition to being a thermostat, Nest is equipped with various sensors such as for
temperature, humidity, light perception, etc., analyzes information collected and
accumulated using a unique algorithm, determines the daily movement patterns and
preferences of users, and automatically creates a comfortable environment

Works with Nest
In June 2014, “Works with Nest” program for developers is announced
[Contents]
Nest’s API is published, and development by various device manufacturers to create
equipment that links to Nest is promoted. More than 50 small and large companies are
participating in this program.

In July 2014, the “Thread Group” standards organization for wireless
communication standards for IoT was established under the initiative of Nest

 In July 2015, a new technological standard “Thread Version 1.0” was
announced. Member companies became able to access the technological
specifications in order to develop products that comply with Thread.
 As of April 2016, there were more than 220 participating member
companies. The major home control products manufacturer Somfy, major
home security products manufacturer Tyco, Qualcomm Technologies, and
major lighting products manufacturer OSRAM are active as central
members.

With regard to the sales composition in 2015, approx. 66% of the total was related
to the iPhone sales. Approx. 87% is accounted for by sales of Apple’s major
products, combining the iPhone with the iPad and Mac.

Trends Associated with the Smart Home Business
Announced HomeKit as an iOS function in 2014. In 2016, Apple
announced the Home app, which integrates a user interface.
[Characteristics of HomeKit]
Function that controls “accessories” such as lighting equipment, air
conditioners, door locks, etc. from an iPhone or iPad on which iOS operates.
Using the built-in audio assistance function “Siri”, it is possible to carry out
operations by speaking into an iPhone.

Development of HomeKit-compatible Accessories
[Development requirements]
To develop HomeKit-compatible accessories, it is necessary to become
a MFi licensee, follow guidelines specified by MFi, and mount functions
that follow HomeKit specifications.
Currently, more than 50 brands worldwide including Phillips (lighting
equipment), Elgato (sensors), Netatmo (facial-recognition home
cameras), etc. are making approaches toward providing products that
are compatible with the HomeKit framework.

promotes open activities such as Works With Nest and Thread. Let's think
about Google's business strategy assumed in this area from now on.
