On the quiz, students will be given a variety of statements and asked to identify which of the 6 G.R.A.P.E.S
aspects matches that statement. The overall key idea is for students to have an understanding of how
civilizations from throughout history will be studied in this class.
GEOGRAPHY



Different civilizations around the world may live in very different geographical environments.
The geography of a specific location directly influences the daily lives of people living on that land.
o
EXAMPLE: Life in Arizona from July-September is very different than life in Alaska from July-September
People must weigh the Pros and Cons of a certain area by taking advantage of what the area offers, and developing strategy on
how to cope with what the area may not offer.
RELIGION



Religion is an influential force for the way billions of people live their day to day lives.
Understanding different religions helps one understand different cultures and beliefs.
Different religions and belief systems have originated and spread to different areas of the world.
ACHIEVEMENTS

Achievements are the lasting works (man created) of a society/civilization

What types of things were built?

What was invented?

How was technology improved?
o
How is modern life influenced by the achievements from the past?
POLITICAL STRUCTURE




Who runs the society/civilization and how do they go about doing so?
Who has the power? Why?
What type of government is used?
o
Some civilizations are ruled by a single ruler while others used majority vote to made decisions.
What types of laws are there, and what are the consequences for breaking those laws?
ECONOMY




How does a society use its resources?
What do they trade or sell? How are goods/resources traded?
Are there taxes? If so, how are taxes used?
An economy is based in large part off of supply and demand of a good or resource.
SOCIAL STRUCTURE



How are the individuals in a society/civilization organized?
Are there different social classes?
What factors might influence a person’s position within a social structure?
