Overview
Philippine music describes the traditional and culture impacts of the ancient civilizations in Asia to our country. Filipinos’ musical culture
gathered great vocal and instrumental music from colonizers like the Spaniards and the Americans. Many forms, with different characteristics and
functions.
Lesson 1
Sacred Music of Luzon
For over three centuries, Spanish music influenced the liturgical and devotional of the Philippines, particularly in the lowlands of Luzon. The
effects of these influences affected the different religious practices of the Filipino people. The locals maintain cultural traditions through the Hispanic
influenced music that varies according to places or towns.

Mass
Catholic faith was preached to the natives through the introduction of the liturgical mass in Latin text. The music that went with it was in the Western
style. The parts of the Liturgical Mass are the following:

Pastores
Pastores is a Christmas song performed in Honor of the child Jesus in a manger who was visited by shepherds.
Moro-moro
Moro-moro portrays the battle between the Christians and Muslims, and also the adaptations of legends about princesses and knight-errant. The
triumphant entry or exit of the vanquished were supplemented by Spanish music. The entrance and exit pf the performers on stage were
accompanied by a traditional march. It was one of the most theatrical plays during the Spanish period.
Pabasang Pasyon
Pasyon is a verse narrative on the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ. It is written in the quintilla verse in almost all major Philippine languages. It
has a stanza of five line with each line containing eight syllables. It is performed in homes, chapels, and even in outdoor improvised outhouses
created for purpose.
Senakulo
Senakulo came from the Spanish cenaculo – a Lenten play that describes events from the Old and New Testaments related to the life, suffering,
and death of Christ. It is the Philippine version of the Passion drama.
Salubong
Salubong on Easter Sunday is held early morning in the plaza before the dawn mass. The flow of the presentation is about the reenactment of the
meaning between the Virgin Mary and her newly risen Son. There are angels accompanying the celebrations by singing “Alleluia!” while the church
bells are being played to proclaim the end of the Lenten season.
Flores De Mayo
Flores de Mayo is celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. The people offer flowers to Virgin Mary once they arrive at the church after the procession.
It is held in the Philippines during the month of May.
Santacruzan
Santacruzan is a devotion honoring St. Helena (known as Reyna Elena) and Emperor Constantine finding the True Cross in Jerusalem. It happens
during the last day of the Flores de Mayo when a procession of beautiful ladies of the town is celebrated.

Tiples young chorus boy sopranos who are trained and sustained by important parishes such as the Las Pinas and Sto. Domingo churches.

The bamboo organ is an important of Philippine history and culture. It is the pride of the town of Las Pinas. The bamboo organ is located at
the St. Joseph Parish Church in Las Pinas City.
Lesson 2
Secular Music of Luzon
Philippine secular music served as a good vehicle not only for entertainment, but also for other significant social functions and purposes. It is
done either individually or in small and/or big groups. It had been an effective catalyst for colonial integration and was also an effective means for an
almost spontaneous fusion of the indigenous and the Western styles of Musical consciousness.

is one of the vocal traditional music of the Filipino people. It expresses the people’s everyday activities,
customs and beliefs. It is also known as “the voice of the people”.

It is the Filipino word for serenade. This type of secular music refers to a young man trying to convince
a woman by singing or in other word is Courtship. It is usually accompanied by a guitar, violin or flute.

It is a type of dance written in duple meter. It is also the National Dance of Czech Republic.

It is a war song that became famous for the Batanguenos. It serves as the inspirations of the Filipinos
whose continuing fight for freedom. Among the revolutionaries of Bulacan, Jocelynang Baliwag serves
as the “Kundiman of Himagsikan”

It is a traditional Filipino song that expresses the lofty sentiment of love and even heroism, in a
passionate but melancholic mood. Kundiman is a contraction word of “Kung Hindi Man” which means
though I am not.
