Case Study Integumentary System
PATIENT PROFILE: This 59-year old, fair skinned Caucasian man is seen in the dermatology clinic for
evaluation.
SUBJECTIVE DATA: Patient complains of a small but slowly enlarging papule on his right cheek. Lesion is
described as persistent and oozing, no pruritus is reported. Patient worried that the growth could be
cancerous. He has history of significant solar exposure due to his employment as a telephone line
worker.
OBJECTIVE DATA: Physical Examination, patient has a 1 x 1.5 cm pigmented epithelial neoplasm with
semi-translucent border, loss of normal skin markings, and center induration. Telangiectatic vessels
overlie lesion.
DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES: Biopsy results: BCC

Definitions:
pruritus-itchy skin can be caused or worsened by dry skin
Lesion- an abnormal change in structure of an organ or part due to injury or disease especially : one
that is circumscribed and well defined
epithelial neoplasm - is a grouping of tumors arising from the glands and epithelium
induration - Localized hardening of soft tissue of the body. The area becomes firm, but not as hard as
bone
Telangiectatic vessels- are dilated or broken blood vessels located near the surface of the skin or
mucous membranes
BCC- Basal Cell Carcinoma - epithelial tumor arising from the epidermis. It seldom metastasizes but
invades local tissue.
