Post Assessment Issues of Abuse and Child Safety Summer 2020 Please answer the following questions with the new information you have and send to me Cole_R@heritage.edu Thanks Dr. Cole 1. What is your definition of child abuse? Child abuse can be in many forms and often is a combination of physical, emotional and physiological attacks from outside sources. Bullying from other children, physical harm from adults and lack of self respect are all abuse. 2. How often have you seen or heard of a child being abused? I was abused as a child, so I take this personally… I know that if I were to hear or know of child abuse, I would report it immediately. 3. What are the different kinds of child abuse? Physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, sexual abuse 4. Do you know the laws in the State of Washington for Child Abuse? Yes, I did not before this class, but now I am aware. 5. Are you familiar with your school districts policies regarding child abuse and safety? I do not work at a school, but I know this subject is very important and schools must have policies on reporting child abuse and dealing with safety. 6. How do you feel about school staff and faculty dating students? Fraternization is very important to me having been in the military, nobody could date anyone in their chain of command. Faculty should not date students even in college because this can result in favoritism and can undermine morale. 7. Who should you call if you suspect child abuse? Child Protective Services and/or Law Enforcement 8. Do you know the definitions of statutory rape and sexual harassment? Statutory rape is when both parties agree on sexual relations however one person is a minor, but that minor gave consent and was not forced. Although the minor gave consent, it is statutory rape because a child cannot give consent until the child turns 18. Sexual harassment is when someone sexually harasses another person in a workplace, school, etc. An example of sexual harassment can be verbal unwanted gestures (when a man whistles at a woman when she walks by, says look at that ass) Sexual harassment occurs more then we mention it, and it is not ok. 9. How can YOU make children safer from Child Abuse? Conduct child abuse seminars for children and families. Ensure we are teaching our students about child abuse in school. 10. Can you think of how diversity and poverty issues effect child abuse? Low income parents often stress and ignore kids due to their hardships which can lead to neglect and emotional trauma. Children with diverse backgrounds can face bullying from their family and other students.
