Your Proof:
(1). I can identify the importance of the border states.
This means I can complete a map showing states
belonging in the Union (identifying those that were
border states) and those belonging in the Confederacy.
This also means I will be able to list at least 3 reasons,
with evidence, why the border states were critical to
the Union war effort.

(2). I can identify and assess the impact of the strengths
and weaknesses of the Union and the Confederacy.
This means I can create a list of the strengths and
weaknesses of each side involved in the Civil War.
This also means that I analyze the strengths &
weaknesses of each side and make a prediction, based
on evidence, on which side should win.
This also means I will complete a Venn diagram
comparing/contrasting strategies of the Union and the
Confederacy.

(3). I can define “turning point” and assess the impact
of identified “turning points” during the Civil War.
This means I will create a photo timeline placing Fort
Sumter, Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Sherman’s
March in sequential order. Each event should include
the date, a photo, identify 5 basic facts.
This also means I will create a chart to assess the
importance of each battle on set criteria I determine
and will make a reasoned conclusion on which had the
greatest impact on the outcome of the war. I will
verbally explain my chart and how I chose my event.

(4). I can explain why many individuals considered the
Civil War “a rich man’s war but a poor man’s fight”.
This also means I will create a Venn diagram
comparing a volunteer army to a conscripted army.
This means I will also be able to complete a table
showing each side’s conscription policy and the
public’s reactions to it.
This means I will also create a table, chart, or diagram
showing total army size for each side, number of
soldiers that volunteered, number of soldiers that were
conscripted and the number of total casualties (deaths).

and technological advancements used during the Civil
War.
This means I can create slideshow that identifies the
following advancements: rifle/minie ball, ironclads,
medical care and photojournalism. The slideshow
should include a title, a picture and at least a sentence
summarizing the impact.

Address and analyze what themes remain relevant
today.
This means I will research the Gettysburg Address
and create a poster invitation that shows who is
giving it, where/when it will be given and why it is
being given.
This also means I will read and analyze the speech to
identify important themes.

This means I will research the experiences of African
Americans in the Union army and in the Confederacy.
This also means that I will write a letter home, from a
black member of the 54th Regiment from
Massachusetts.
This also means I will complete a graphic organizer
showing the multiple ways Confederate slaves
impacted the war effort.
